Multiples

Exercise

Before I became pregnant I exercised many times during the week. Since I've become pregnant with twins I get nervous just walking around. I asked my OB a couple months ago and he pretty much said stick to light walking and swimming. Now that I've reached 27 weeks my exercising is pretty much nonexistent due to me not wanting to cause pre-term labor. What's the protocol for exercising with multiples this far along?

Re: Exercise

  • Ask your doc but if you're peri appts. are checking out A-OK, then I think swimming, walking and prenatal yoga should be fine.

That's what I was doing until 30 weeks. My cervix started shortening and they put me on bedrest.

edit to add - I don't think the activity led to my shortening cervix.

  • i would ask your dr and listen to your body. i was never put on any kind of restrictions, but stopped doing anything once i started to ache, get really tired and winded and generally not feel comfortable. if you still feel good and the dr says youre doing good, then do what you do.

  • Always check with your doctor, but most importantly, listen to your body.  For me, I felt great the entire time.  I ran 15+ miles a week right up until the week I delivered.  I didn't go nearly as far or as fast as I did pre-pg, but it was mostly for my sanity anyway.

While keeping under a certainly heartrate is outdated and a poor guideline, I was very diligent about staying out of the heat.  Dehydrating and overheating are major concerns that could cause major problems.  One run around 20w had me with bh contractions for almost an hour afterwards.  I got a support belt the next day and never ran that time day again.

  • I just asked at my OB appt yesterday and she said: I'm welcome to do what my body is used to, but listen to my body and don't overdo it

  • I've never been given an exercise restriction by my doctor. They say if I feel good to keep going, but to listen to my body. Lately it's very hard for me to do even light cardio because of the weight of my belly, but I'm still doing what I can when I can.
