Crib placement question

This is probably really stupid but . . .

We have 2 possible walls we can put the crib against. They run parallel to each other. On one wall there is an air vent. Would it be a bad idea to place the crib on the air vent wall (the vent is up high, near the ceiling) or will the air blow out towards the other wall bypassing the crib directly underneath?

Does that make sense? I just don't want the baby to get too hot/cold by having direct air blowing on him constantly and I can't really tell in the room where the coldest spot is - although it seems to be on the non air vent side.

Re: Crib placement question

  • Is the vent on the wall or the ceiling above?  If it's on the wall, the airflow is going to be outward most likely, so that's probably a better wall for the crib.

  • To me it seems like the wall with the vent would be better, logically it seems like the air would blow straight out rather than down. You could test it out by putting a thermometer on each side for a period of time and see what each registers at.

  • There is a ceiling vent right above our crib. I bought one of those plastic shield things that directs the air to the side rather than straight down. Try that maybe.

  • Cool air blowing on the baby can help reduce the chance for SIDS.  It is often recommended to put a fan in the room to blow on the baby for this.  You can always wrap the baby in more layers if they become cold.  I would recommend putting the baby on a wall that can easily be seen from the door but they can't necessarily see you.  I nannied a baby last year that was such a light sleeper.  It was nice that the crib was right inside the door so I could crack the door and peek in and her not know that I am there.  If he saw me or I creaked a floor board, nap was done.  I hope this helps!

  • I read that air flow is good to prevent SIDS :)  I would put it under the vent.
