Infant seat, or convertible?

Which way did you go? I like the idea of having a travel system so I can just take the infant seat out and hook it to the stroller if baby is asleep, but I also like the idea of a convertible seat that will last us years.

How did you choose which way to go?

Re: Infant seat, or convertible?

  • we did both.  We used the infant seat until she was able to sit up...about 6-7 months.  DD was almost 9 lbs so she was way too heavy to be carried any longer.  Then we switched to the convertable.  I couldnt imagine not having the infant carrier..we used it every where we went..where would you put the baby when you go out?  Or do you plan on wearing it in a sling everywhere?

  • We bought an infant seat not because we plan to use the carrier, but because there was no way a convertible seat would fit facing backwards in our compact car. The smallest "footprint" was Chicco Keyfit or Graco Snugride. We got the keyfit because of the straps.
  • We plan on using both. Once LO outgrows the infant seat we will move her to a convertible seat. I like the idea of not having to wake her up to take her out of her carseat.

  • We had both.  I loved the infant seat and that I could take her in and out of places in it without waking her up, etc.

We changed to the convertible seat around 8-9 months, once she started getting too long for her infant seat.  I would never had made the change before she could sit up on her own in buggies, etc.  I will admit that if she was asleep in the car, it was much more painful to have to wake her up!

  • We went straight to a convertible. Mostly this was because I couldn't imagine carrying the baby around in the bucket. We wear her when going to the grocery store and such, it's so much easier. When we go out to eat, we take our high chair (a space saver that hooks to the chair.)

I've never missed having the infant carrier. She's an easy baby, though, and doesn't mind being moved around. I've never had any problems with waking her up, she usually just falls right back to sleep.

But it really depends on what your lifestyle is. For us, skipping the infant carrier is the way we wanted to do it. A lot of people told me I'd regret skipping it. I don't. We did, however, keep an open mind and knew we'd go buy an infant seat in an instant if we'd found we needed it.

ETA: DD was also 9 lbs 11 oz at birth and is still off the charts. There's no way I'd want to carry her around in an infant seat now!

  • Thanks for the help everyone. This is our first so we are still learning exactly how everything works and what is best! lol
  • We did both. We moved to the convertible at 11 months when he was too tall for his infant carrier. I know a lot of people feel like they get to be to heavy but DS was 21 pounds and it did not bother me at all to carry him in the carrier. Especially when he was small it was so much easier to carry him from place to place and let him keep sleeping. I also liked that when he was small I could put a blanket over the infant carrier so when we were out in the snow he was not getting snowed on.

  • We were intending to start w/ the convertible, and we found we weren't able to do as much as we hoped.  There is nothing like being able to get your child out of the car in a click!  I would highly recommend getting the infant seat.

Now...that being said, some people totally over-use the infant seat.  It is NOT a place for our DD to hang out, unless she is in the car or out at a restaurant.  We still try to get DD out of it as much as humanly possible.  As a PP said, they tend to be baby buckets!
