need to gain weight

I have only gained 15 pounds the whole pregnancy and the past three visit I've been exactly the same. The Dr. said he was happy with my progress and the babies each weigh a little over three pounds. But it seems like I could use to gain a little bit of weight just to make sure they get to a good weight before delivery. For the first time in my life I'm supposed to eat more and I have no idea what to have. I know the usually fast food things but I dont' want to eat only that, any thoughts?

Re: need to gain weight

  • I wouldn't recommend fast food!  I ate a lot of more "natural" foods that are higher in fat-- peanut butter, trail mix with nuts, avocado, cheese, higher-fat milk/yogurt.  And maybe a treat of real, high-fat ice cream for dessert?  I love Trader Joe's premium ice creams, I eat some every night now that I'm breast feeding.  But especially if you are not that hungry, or have a hard time eating large quantities, pick foods that are higher in fat for the serving size.

  • Do you drink liquid protein drinks? I was told to do so in the 3rd tri and wish I would have drank them the whole pg. The protein source, in research studies, has shown to absorb/reach the placentas more quickly. Boost or Ensure have a metallic taste so I would mix one in the blender w/ a banana, some ice, and either a Greek yogurt (which has a lot of protein, too!) or milk or even ice cream!

I'd rec. a lot of mini meals so that you're gaining w/o feeling stuffed or bloated while upping your calories. I went to a nutritionist and she helped incorp. "good fats" that I ate all throughout the day--nuts and avacados are great sources!

As long as your LOs are measuring well and your dr. isn't concerned, try not to stress yourself out. You're doing a great job!

  • just eat healthy foods.  nuts, nut-butters, avocado, foods cooked in olive oil...all very healthy and high in calories.

i make an "energy bar" for my babies and its super easy and packs a lot of punch:
in a food processor, put 2 cups oats, 1/4 cup whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup slivered almonds, 1/2 cup dried fruit (i like dates and apricots), 1/2 cup fruit (i use banana, but apple sauce or pumpkin would work), 1/2 cup sunflower or pumpkin seeds, 1/2 powdered milk, 1/2 cup wheat germ.  process, and then add 2 eggs, cinnamon and a little honey.  put in a baking dish and bake at 350 for around 20 minutes.  (you can get all the ingredients from the bulk bin at any health store).

  • I ate a lot of whoppers with cheese paired with a salad and followed by milkshakes. I had ice cream or milkshakes everyday. I also ate a lot of peanut butter, trail mix, cheese and avocado. I drank Carnation Instant Breakfast mix every morning with whole milk. If the doctors aren't worried, I would try not to worry either.
  • I only gained 18 pounds the whole pregnancy.  At 34 weeks, both babies were 4 lb 13 oz.  It was great to leave the hospital weighing less than before I was pregnant.  If your doctor is not worried, then I would not worry either.

  • I am 33weeks 1 day and I have just hit the 20 pound weight gain. Ultrasound at 32wks  est weights at 4lbs 10oz and 4lbs 3oz.

I was always nervous I wasnt gaining enough and for a few wks didnt gain any. Also  I have not put any weight on anywhere else on my body.

I am curious to see when they are born how much they really do end up weighing.

  • All great suggestions! I'm off to the store to get some more yogurt and things like that. I do have carnation instant breakfast so I'll maybe drink a few of those a day. I love that snack bar recipe, I think I'll make that for the fiuture as well!

You are all right though I guess as long as the Dr. isn't worried I shouldn't and I really and kind of happy I haven't gaine a lot, less to loose! I just felt like a bad mommy compared to Dr. Lukes' book and a few others. I think a big part of it is just that its soooo hard to eat and nothing sounds good. Shakes and ice cream sound the best for my throat/heatburn so I''ll try those.
