Toddler constipation

Help me with ideas.  Poor kiddo is having a really rough time in the past week.  It is so bad that she was sobbing and sweaty this evening trying to go.  Keeps telling us "my booty hurts."  We have taken away milk, cheese, yogurt, and bananas in the past few days.  She eats lots of fruits and veggies, and drinks like a champ.

I got some glycerin liquid suppositories tonight, but she managed to go before I got home with them.  We are pushing prune purees (she won't eat dried prunes or drink the juice).  I also got her some Fiber One bars which she will eat about half of one.  I am at a loss for other things to try.  I plan to give it another few days to see if it corrects before we get the pedi involved.  If you have had the same issue with your LO, what did you do to help it resolve?

Re: Toddler constipation

  • Will she eat raisins?  I found this webpage with lots of ideas although it seems like you are already trying most of them.  I hope B feels better soon!

  • Ground Flax seed meal. You can get it at Meijer or Kroger.

Get it into her however you can. My kids will just eat it on top of yogurt or cereal but you can mix it into a smoothie or bake it into muffins.

I am not sure how it will work to fix the problem since we have never crossed that bridge.. but I know it keeps things moving around here..:LOL

     Good luck!

  • I think prune juice works best, and to get Ava to drink it I did 1/2 apple juice and 1/2 prune juice.  Lots of water also.  We have done Miralax but it didn't help tremendously and takes longer to kick in than prune juice, I think.  Other than that, I try to stick to a normal diet but eliminate milk.  I have also been told that overdoing it with fiber (other than whatever is normally in their diet) can have the opposite effect in toddlers in helping with constipation.  I'm not sure if that's true (I guess it can vary from person to person like anything else) but I do wonder if it is the reason Miralax (which is basically a fiber boost) didn't do much for Ava.

  • I feel like I'm becoming a spokesperson for Miralax, but it's amazing what it has done for DD.  Diet alone was not going to fix things for her.
  • I just posted this same issue a few days ago. DS has a hell of a time going #2 lately and we're trying everything. I do Fiber One yogurts, lots of green veggies, apple juice, Miralax. I'm going to try the flaxseed next to see if that helps. The big issue is my kid loves carbs (breads, crackers) and I know that isn't helping. Poor kiddos Sad
