question about teething...

I am 99% sure that Charlotte is teething b/c she keeps sticking her fingers in her mouth and crying like her gums are hurting, but she has no other symptoms like fever or even swollen gums.  They are maybe a little swollen, but are not majorly inflamed and there is nothing poking through.  She seemed so miserable and wouldn't nap though, so I broke down and gave her Motrin and put some Orajel on her gums.  I hate doing that not knowing for sure what exactly I'm giving her medicine for, but within 10 minutes she had stopped crying and is now getting some much needed rest.  So, my question - could it still be teething if she doesn't have any of the tell tale signs?  I don't want to keep giving her medicine if it's not, but something is definitely bothering her and the Motrin/Orajel definitely gave her some relief.

Re: question about teething...

  • Olivia always gets fevers when teething so we never know if it is teething or viral.  However, her gums don't usually get inflamed or anything and then suddenly there will be a tooth popped through.  So maybe Charlotte is just lucky enough not to get fevers when teething. Is she drooling more or have a runny nose? It could just be in the early stages so you can't see it but she can feel it.  Hope she's better soon!

  • It sounds like she does have some tell tale signs.  If she's in pain and teething tablets, Orajel, and/or Motrin seem to help, I say give it.

This is exactly how Tyler is, too.  He doesn't get fevers, he doesn't have red gums, he doesn't even drool and then BAM a tooth shows up.

I agree with Lyons too, if she stopped crying within 10 minutes, it helped, and you are doing the right thing.
