OK--Slew of CD questions

So I broke down and went and picked up 3 Rumparooz today at SmartMomma. They don't have hemp inserts so I'm going to have to see what the doubler insert will do tonight as a trial run. If they end up working I might try to CD more than we use disposables since I'll be doing diaper laundry already. I know the cost is less to use cloth, but I know my husband is going to have a coronary when he finds out I spent $75 on 3 diapers today.

1. How many diapers do you really need total? We go through probably 7/8 diapers a day depending on the day.

2. What is the typical cost to buy a stash?

3. I want to do a cost analysis so we'll see what we'll save by CDing most of the time. (I can't say full time because we won't do NB diapers in cloth and we'll use disposables sometimes.)

4. I figure I'll buy most of 1 size so I can use them for baby #2. I definitely want to get the most out of them!

5. Anything else I should know. I am pretty clueless about CD's. I only know what I learned today, so I really am lost to all the lingo and products out there!

Thanks for your help!

  • 1. How many diapers do you really need total? We go through probably 7/8 diapers a day depending on the day.   We have about 25 diapers, mostly pockets and a couple of fitteds.  This lasts us 2-3 days when we CD full time.

    2. What is the typical cost to buy a stash?  We LOVE Kawaii pockets that I got 10 for $67 brand new.  They are basically BG ripoffs, but work better for us, we have never leaked or blown out and O is a heavy wetter.  I got some BG's at consignment, some on mega sale.  I would say we probably spent about $300ish.  Looking back, I would buy all Kawaii.

    3. Anything else I should know. I am pretty clueless about CD's. I only know what I learned today, so I really am lost to all the lingo and products out there!  One issue that we had was the smell and figuring out a good wash routine and disposal.  We have deodorizers in the pail with a garbage bag and wash no more than every 3 days.  Make sure you get a detergent that is safe on CD's and diaper ointment.  (Stripping them is a PITA!) . I like snaps better than the velcro because I feel like my BG's velcro deteriorated really fast, and O has learned to un-velcro and take them off.

  • . How many diapers do you really need total? We go through probably 7/8 diapers a day depending on the day.   I have 15 diapers and that will last me 2 days if I CD FT (which I normally do on the weekends)

    2. What is the typical cost to buy a stash?  I think I spent $350 total (i sold some prefolds earlier that I used for NB stage).

    3. I want to do a cost analysis so we'll see what we'll save by CDing most of the time. (I can't say full time because we won't do NB diapers in cloth and we'll use disposables sometimes.)   This is probably the most challenging thing - not sure I'm actually saving money, but also feel better about not using disposibles as much

    4. I figure I'll buy most of 1 size so I can use them for baby #2. I definitely want to get the most out of them!   1 size are great - but don't think they would work well on a NB (most of them start fitting well around 10lbs or so.

    5. Anything else I should know. I am pretty clueless about CD's. I only know what I learned today, so I really am lost to all the lingo and products out there!  Snaps rock!  I have some velcro I need to convert to snaps b/c Ella will rip off the velcro (not fun when she wakes up from a nap covered in Pee.  Also - buying used will save you a TON of money.  I figure that I wash them in very hot water with a little bleach to kill all the germies anyways when I first get them.  Make sure you use CD safe laundry detergent and diaper rash cream.

  • 1. I think right now we have 30ish, which gets me a good 3 days. The nighttime diapers are different, we only have 3. We have 13 bumgenius one size and several sized ones... I like having a mixture of types since the sized ones are a little trimmer than the one sized when she's still on the small end of the weight limits of the one size.

    2. If you're going to make it cheaper & seem like a good deal, you need to look at used diapers. JMO though. I have a few of some different types I probably wouldn't have pursued new that I love (Kushies, Nana's Bottoms) and really like them! Rumparooz are awesome, but they're also some of the more pricey of brands. I found the Kushies on craigslist & NB from Futurejhl :)

Also, if you like the rumparooz, they have some seconds on their website (sold without inserts). I got 3 of these - they're a great deal and apparently only 5% of the particular load was affected, so you have a 95% chance of the diaper you buy being completely fine.

    3. Is something like this what you're talking about?  Esp if you're going to use them on a second child the math should definitely be in the CD favor. Even more so if you can resell them when you're done & get some used.

Not sure if anyone posted CD101 and 102 yet from eons ago, but here it is. That has a lot of info to orient a new CD'er

Welcome to the dark side ;) It's shockingly fun & not nearly as hard as it sounds!!

  • 1. How many diapers do you really need total? We go through probably 7/8 diapers a day depending on the day. We have about 30, doing wash every 3-4 days

    2. What is the typical cost to buy a stash? I think it was about $500 total

    3. I want to do a cost analysis so we'll see what we'll save by CDing most of the time. (I can't say full time because we won't do NB diapers in cloth and we'll use disposables sometimes.) I figured out at one point that the 6month mark is where we'll break even. Given that we occasionally drop her back in 'sposies (travel / day out and don't want to haul that many diapers with us) it'll probably push out to 7months.

    4. I figure I'll buy most of 1 size so I can use them for baby #2. I definitely want to get the most out of them! Ah, we went with the one-size, so that might be a difference.

    5. Anything else I should know. I am pretty clueless about CD's. I only know what I learned today, so I really am lost to all the lingo and products out there! AIO = all in one or pocket diaper is the only one I know offhand
