I just spoke with a LC about my inability to get any milk with the Medela Symphony. She said some women don't respond well to the Medela and respond better to the Ameda. She was pushing renting a Ameda hospital grade pump. I am going to meet with her next week and try it out, but I was wondering if anyone else found the Ameda worked better than Medela. I am just concerned that she is trying to push the Ameda because that is the brand she sells.
Also she rents them at $85/ month. Is that teh going rate? It seems very high to me. if I am going to pump until my DD is one it will cost us $850. At that rate I think formula may be cheaper.
Re: Medela vs Ameda
I'd buy one at that rate. You can get an Ameda for under $200. I had the Lansinoh pump which was the same as the Ameda Purely Yours that I had for around $100 and I loved it. The controls are different than the older style Medelas as the speed and suction are separate dials and not a combined one, but I think the freestyle/PISA are now the same way.
No experience with the Medela, but I rented an Ameda Elite for 3 months before purchasing my Ameda Purely Yours. I had the same output with both pumps, so I was really impressed by the PY. I think both are excellent pumps, and they are a closed-system. Clean up is a breeze!
I paid $50/month to rent my Elite from Drug Mart (a chain).
At that price you might as well buy a pump.
I had the Lansnoh double electric which is the same as the Ameda. I now have a Medela Freestyle. I think they are both great. I never did see a pumping difference I got the freestyle for the versitality of it since I am an EPer and a full time working mom... just works better for my needs.
I don't think one is better then the other.
I am having the same result.
I am currently renting the Elite, I am testing it out for a work trip to see if I can pump faster. I own a purely yours and I pump about the same with both but the Elite is a lot faster. I do seem to get more at night with the Elite than I do with the PU but I am sure that has something to do with the amount of time I am willing to sit at the pump LOL. The $200.00 pump the previous poster referred to is the personal pump a hospital grade pump runs over a grand. Check out the Ameda site to get more information on places that rent. I am renting for 65 a month.
Renting a Symphony from South Shore Hospital in Weymouth and Sturdy Memorial in Attleboro is $85/month, so that's probably the growing rate in MA. At least in Eastern/Southeastern MA.
Ameda and Medela are comparable brands, I think it's natural for some women to respond better to one over the other. I would give renting one a shot for the first month and if it works well and you really plan to pump for that long, then maybe consider buying one for yourself. My Ameda Purely Yours was about $300 from BRU and it's a closed system, meaning the parts can all be replaced or sanitized, so I could theoretically hand it down to someone or sell it when I'm done with it.
