Chair for nursery?

Question for you ladies. How important do you think it is that the chair in the nursery rocks or glides? I was thinking about doing something a bit more contemporary, and that I might actually use after the baby. Thoughts?

Re: Chair for nursery?

  • I could not live without our recliner in DD's room.  I am in there every single night with her.  Even if DD wasn't a craptastic sleeper, I could not imagine not having a chair that rocked and reclined this past year, especially when she was younger.

  • For me, I don't find it necessary to have a rocker/glider. We have one in there, and we used it a little bit when Jonah was little, but to be honest, I kind of hate the rocking/gliding motion because it makes me seasick (I know, I'm a weirdo). My husband still uses it, but it wasn't a necessity for us.

  • We haven't used our glider much yet, but I LOVE it.  It's so comfy and when we start reading to her more, I'm sure we'll use it tons.  We have a Best Chair recliner.  If it survives nursery use, we'll eventually be able to use it elsewhere in the house.
  • I got a glider and didn't really use the gliding feature all that much. I loved having something in there to prop my feet on though. I am actually thinking of selling it and getting a different kind of chair but haven't been able to justify the money yet - that is, unless I sell it for a fair amount at the yard sale that we are thikning of having next weekend.
  • We started out with a wooden rocker in there that we had - it went with the furniture.  After a couple of weeks we got a glider because the rocker was just too low to the ground that it was hard to get up out of without waking DD up.  The glider was so much better.  I think it's actually easier to "rock" in the glider than in the rocker - it doesn't require so much effort on my part.

  • I regret the chair we got.  I should have gotten a recliner rather than a chair that just glides.  It is not comfortable to sleep in, and I am in there almost every night with her so I have to "sleep" in it a ton.

This.  I *let* my MIL talk us into [her] purchasing a cheapo glider and ottoman set.  I wish I would've stuck with my guns and gone with a more functional and comfortable chair that offered both recliner and glider functions.  I rarely use(d) the chair with DS1, so her money just went to waste.

  • I have a glider, but I rarely use it for anything other than a stationary chair.

  • We have a Best Chair recliner/rocker.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE our chair and we seriously could not have survived the first year without it.  Between nursing and being up all night the first few months it was a lifesaver. I can't even tell you how many times Carter and I slept in that chair the first few months.  Now that he is bigger and we're no longer rocking him to sleep we still use it daily to have story time before his naps and before bed.  It honestly might be the most comfortable piece of furniture that we have in our home.

Also, right after I came home from the hospital I was very sore from having and episiotomy and 3rd degree tear.  It was so nice to sink into that chair and just relax with the baby.  I had totally underestimated how much that I was going to need it and glad that we splurged on that one piece of furniture to complete our nursery.

Like Sara if our chair survives the nursery days we will eventually be able to use it somewhere else in our home.

  • I think I'm in the minority, but I didn't miss having a gliding chair.  I found a stationary chair that I really liked at Home Goods, and I plan on using it in another room once the kids out grow the nursery.  FWIW, we have a chair in our family room that can rock/recline, so that probably influenced my decision too. Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the opinions. I really want a contemporary kind of chair. I found one at home goods today and DH is bitching because it doesn't have arms. But it was so comfortable. I also found a bright pink ottoman that goes really well with the nursery colors so you'd have someting to put your feet up on. I'm not giving up on this yet.

  • Hrm. Not to take sides in the marital argument, but you might want something with arms. Particularly while nursing or feeding. Those little buggers get heavy! It's nice to have something to lean your arms on when they get tired. :-)

I was thinking the same thing....or when you fall asleep in the chair in the middle of the night even though you didn't really mean to, but every time you move, the baby woke up and in the interest of getting any sleep, you just cave....not that I have any experience there or anything.

  • ARMS!  They are really nice to lean on when nursing.  I have a really nice pottery barn style (not brand) chair that rocks/glides and prop my feet on an ottoman.  My mistake was deciding that all furniture in the nursery had to be white.  Including a chair that my precious darling daughter will eventually poop or puke on.
