HPV

I feel safe talking about it here! I got diagnosed with HPV last week after my pap came back abnormal! They said it could go away after Grayson is born and that it may be caused by changes in my cervix! They took a biopsy and I should have the results back in a few days. Any suggestions or know of anything to help the situation? I'm obviously not happy about it but am sure things will work out!

  • It is actually very common. One doctor I had told me over 50% of women in the US have or have had it detected in a PAP. They will probably just encourage you to stay on top of annual (or more frequent) PAPs, but it shouldn't affect the baby at all.

Funny story: this was my first "pregnancy cry" in front of the doctor when I was 8 weeks. He told me they needed to do a colposcopy (cut out a little piece) and I was freaked out he'd knick the almost-baby. Turns out the snipping and the results were fine. Can we say "hormonal"?!?

  • I was diagnosed with high risk HPV in 2005.  In 2009, after a LEEP removing pre-cancerous cells, I finally got a clean PAP!  In most people (90% according to the CDC) HPV goes away on its own within a year or two.

Low risk HPV causes warts, high risk causes cancer.  Some people have both.  Not knowing the type you have, I'm not really sure how to direct you.  Check out webmd if you want more technical information.

Many people do have cervical changes during pregnancy, so it is nothing to worry about.  As long as your OB monitors you and you are confident in his or her care, you should be fine.

Do not feel embarrassed about HPV, more people you know have it than don't.  It's very common.

  • I was diagnosed in 2002 with the high risk HPV.  It has come and gone several times in the past years.  My dr. says it's nothing to worry about as long as you keep your eye on it.  A lot of women have it in some form.

  • I had low risk HPV about 8 years ago...and no sign of it since.  I think you pretty much do nothing.  It's extremely common.  Just keep getting your regular paps.

  • I had a LEEP to remove abnormal cells as well about 7 years ago.  They didn't test me for HPV until a while after and it was negative but the dr was pretty sure it had been positive prior.  I was told that the risk for HPV-related abnormal PAPs diminishes as you get towards 30.  I'm 32 now and haven't had an abnormal PAP in several years.
  • I was diagnosed about 3 years ago, and know exactly how devistating it can feel! But like PP's have said, it is very, very common and you just want to make sure you stay on top of your annual PAP's. Just be careful and don't do any random google searches about it!!!!! Stay on sites like WebMD or the Mayo Clinic's site. Google is not your friend when it comes to things like this!!!

  • I was diagnosed with high risk HPV last November.  It was very mild and I was going to have a cryofreeze done, but I did not have it done.  I had another pap done a few weeks ago and it came back normal.  The HPV cleared itself, which is common.  I can come back, but my OB did tell me that a lot of times when women test postive during pregnancy, delivery clears away the cells.

Whatever you, don't google!!!   I caused myself a lot of stress reading things on the internet that I shouldn't have.

  • I'm sorry but "THEY took a BIOPSY while you were PG"?

I am so baffled right now.  I had an abnormal pap come back after my first MC over 2 years ago and I literally had a pap smear done about once a month to keep an eye on it.  When they decided they needed more information I had my first biopsy while DH was on deployment no risk of being pg didn't have to take a pg test etc.  The results of that came back low grade and they expected it to clear up on its own.  Well at my 6 month follow up in Jan this year the results were still abnormal and so they called me back to schedule another biopsy, guess what between pap and them calling I had gotten a BFP so I told them about being pg and their response was "ok well we can't do a biopsy then, so we'll follow up with another pap at 16 weeks".  I then miscarried that pg as well and went in for a second biopsy results came back even better than the first biopsy and they told me that my next follow up would be 6 mo.  I then got another BFP so they did my beginning of pg pap and the results came back normal!!  Finally after 2 yrs of abnormal results it had cleared up on it's own.

The fact that it came back abnormal shouldn't stress you out, it is actually quiet common and the results of the biopsy will give you more answers.  That being said I cannot believe they did a biopsy while you are pg and I might go seek a second opinion on if they handled that the right way.  The biopsy takes a part of your cervix and your cervix is what keeps your baby in there (for lack of a better description).

Anyways I hope this helped and I also hope that you understand I don't think you did anything just that my understanding is that they should not have done the biopsy.  Good luck
