thoughts on non-matchy furniture

We have a dark cherry (practically espresso) crib and changer (Europa Baby Geneva).  It was a great deal from Walmart and we decided to go for it.  And I want to use the tall white Hemnes dresser from Ikea and get a matching white Hemnes nightstand for next to the glider.  My bedding and window treatments have chocolate brown as the main color (PBK cocodots), and I have a white shag area rug (washable, from Target- it HAS to be washable for my own sanity, and I couldn't find a color I liked that would go with our wall paint, a pale blue/green color).  I am pretty anal, and on one hand I think having a mix might look eclectic and cool (the vibe I am going for anyway), but on the other I am wondering if I should just paint the cherry furniture a white color to match the Hemnes stuff.  I don't want to get all dark furniture because the room is not huge, and I want it to still feel feminine enough for our girl.  Lastly, the glider I am thinking of getting is an upholstered model that is a light taupe material, so very neutral and could go with anything.  Thoughts?

Re: thoughts on non-matchy furniture

  • I like the eclectic look, too.  I'm going with mismatched furniture.  It's up to you and whether you will think about not matching it all the time.  I don't think I'd paint the crib, though.  Babies tend to teeth on the rails.

  • I like non-matchy furniture.  If the contrast between the dark wood and the white bothers you, paint the white a bright color.  I saw a nursery on here recently that had a bright blue dresser, I think something like that (maybe pull a color from the bedding) would be really cute, eclectic and not so dramatic of a difference.

good idea!  I am going to see how it all shakes down, but painting the white stuff would definitely be easier and I wouldn't have to worry about teething a painted crib.
  • Our doesn't match either and looks great!  Give yourself a little time with it and if anything still bugs you then you can always change it!

  • I'm with the others. My furniture doesn't match at all and I think it looks great. We bought a cherry crib, my folks got us a cherry rocker/glider (slightly different shades of cherry, as the crib is so dark it's pretty much what other companies would call "espresso"), we have an espresso bookcase, and then a dresser and shelving unit I thrifted and painted a bright lime green color to match our scheme, as well as a thrift store end table that I magically found in a bright blue coor just a few shades off from the wall.

Matchy matchy is for pottery barn catalogs. If you look in design magazines, furniture doesn't match. It COMPLEMENTS. ;-)

  • We have an esspresso crib, dresser and chair, a white desk and side table and a bright blue bookshelf.  I prefer the look of non-matching furniture in the nursery.

  • agree with pp.  We did a honey colored dresser from PBK and a honey oak crib from Davinci.  The crib is about 2 shades lighter than the dresser but they are well coordinated.

  • I am a big fan of non matching furniture. I believe as long as the styles work well together, and you tie it all together with accessories it gives you a much more designer look.

  • I too am using a mix of stained wood and painted (off white). I prefer the non-matchy sets if they can coordinate style-wise. Go for it!

  • Ours is mismatched and I love it.  Crib, glider, and book shelf are espresso.  Dresser and nightstand are Hemnes white.  The room is not finished yet but you can see some of it here.  We had the same furniture in DS's nursery as well which was a nautical theme (lots of blues)- so it definitely works with different styles.
