Another ? about washer/dryer on Craigslist

Thanks for your responses before about looking for a washer on Craigslist!

I heard back from the seller, and she said they are 6-7 years old with no major repairs ever needed, works great but they don't want to put them in storage (new place has a set). The set is Whirlpool Duet washer/dryer front loaders for $475, including two pedestal stands with drawers.

What do you think?  DH think maybe we shouldn't since they are 6 years old, but I am thinking I would like to get them.  Would you offer $475 (asking price) or offer something lower?

  • Like someone mentioned before, the pedestals alone are probably $200/each.  So, if you bought them and they quit working after a while - you could get another set and keep the pedestals.  I think it's a great deal even if you pay the asking price!

  • I agree with Sara.  I would totally do it based on the price of the pedistals alone.  I have purchased a washer and a dryer from CL (both randon top loaders) but I have had good luck so far with my mismatched pair.  I paid 100 each.

  • Have you checked Consumer Reports to see how the set is rated?  I think I would do that before spending that much money on them.  If they are well-rated and have a history of lasting a long time with few repairs, I'd probably go for it.  I wouldn't offer the asking price, though.  I'd probably offer more like $400 for the set and hope they bite.  Six years is a lot of time even if they've never been repaired.  If they were used several times a week, I'd want to know that.

I have a Consumer Reports subscription if you would like me to look them up for you.

  • Ditto what everyone else said-- it's a great deal, but check Consumer Reports before you buy. If the set is generally reliable, I would offer $425 or so. A good washer/dryer pair can last a really, really long time-- my parents had their washer/dryer set for 15 years, and DH's parents are pushing 25 years with their set. A good investment is worthwhile.

  • Honestly, that sounds like a great price to me.  I guess you could always offer less, but I think it would already be a great deal.  We just sold our old set on CL.  It was a top-loading set that was 13 years old.  We listed them for $200 for the set and had over 10 people absolutely willing to pay that amount.  It was kind of amazing how many people thought it was a great deal.
  • I would do it before someone else beats you to it.  DH knows of someone who does extended warranties on appliances.  They saved us a ton already.  FB mail me for details.  Go get em!

  • That sounds like a pretty good deal to me; I was looking online and they seem to be rated pretty well.
  • I think the price is reasonable, but CL is a negotiating game.

I'd probably offer $400 and start the negotiations, but I would be willing to pay $475 if they were firm.

    GL!
