Madeline vs Madelyn

I like the name pronounced Mad-eh-lynn and always thought the spelling was Madeline.  But, it seems lately I've been hearing a lot of this name pronounced Mad-uh-line.  Reading the Caroline post below I'm thinking if I want the lynn ending I need to use Madelyn...but really am I that far off?  Has Madeline ever been pronounced Mad-eh-lynn?  Would everyone be confused if I wanted to use Madeline pronounced Mad-eh-lynn?

Re: Madeline vs Madelyn

  • To me, Madeline is always pronounced with the -line ending.

Madeleine or Madelyn both have the -lynn ending. I would consider the Madeleine spelling if you hate the look of Madelyn but like the -lynn pronunciation.

I love Madeline, but I'm not a fan of the others with the -lynn ending.

  • I think it's fine if you want to pronounce them the same.  People will pronounce it whatever way you say it.  That's one of the names on our list!

Madeleine actually makes me think Mad-uh-leen.  I prefer the Madeline spellling, but you probably will have to correct people in the beginning.

This is kind of how I feel too, I really like the name but don't want to have use that spelling to get people to say it right.

Madeleine definitely does not equal Mad-uh-leen.

  • I think if you want the --lynn ending, you should end it in --lynn. It will save a lot of confusion with pronunciation, and since there are so many other little girls named Madelyn, I think that's become the default spelling.

  • I love the name Madeline, it's my little sister's name.  The name is pronounced differently depending on where you're from.  I think this is the best spelling but I've seen some crazy ways as well.  One of the girls I work with spells her daughter's name Madilynn (nms).  Stick with the original, if people pronounce it wrong just correct them- not your fault if they can't figure it out.

Thanks for the input everyone!  I've not seen the spelling Madeleine until today...it's a good option :)

  • My best friend is named Madeline but it's pronounced "Mad-eh-lynn." I don't think I have ever heard someone try to call her "Made-uh-line." So, I don't think people will be confused..

  • I pronounce both Madeleine and Madeline with the -line ending. If you want the -lyn ending spell it Madelyn.

This is one instance where I think the modern spelling variant is necessary. When a name has several various pronunciations, it makes sense to spell the name as phonetically as possible for the pronunciation you desire. As someone whose name was constantly mispronounced, I know how very irritating it can be. Save your daughter the trouble and spell it how you want it to be read.

ETA: Please do not spell it Madelynn, with two Ns. Phonetically that will place the emphasis on the final syllable and if you tried to read that in that way you'd see that it sounds ridiculous.

  • We are going to use Madeline for a middle name if we have another daughter, and we will pronounce it lynn.
