I'm looking for a present for my nephew, and I have babies that will turn one a week before him... this should be a no brainer gift, but i'm having trouble thinking of something.
DDs favorite gift was the FP Stroll Along Stroller, but that probably won't work for your nephew. She also loved her Little Tykes Coupe. Her's in the princess one (thanks MIL...), but they make really cute police car and fire truck ones. My new go-to 1st bday present is a cute toddler backpack full of board books, since DD's loves since she turned 1 have been books and putting things into bags.
We had Christmas & B-day both close together. FP Laugh & Learn House and Radio Flyer pink bug little scooter thing are two things she's continued to play with over time.
DD loves her Zany Zoo. We got it when she was 7 months old and she still plays with it every day. Other favorites include her xylophone, duplo blocks, and books.

We bought our son the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe and it was and is a huge hit. We are going to get our neice one as well for her birthday because she wouldn't stay out of our son's! So cute!
DD loves the play kitchen we bought her. She also carries around the toy laptop my sister bought for her everywhere she goes! MegaBlocks were a hit too... $20 at Walmart, BRU, Target, or anywhere else.
I think a savings bond is a great idea...we got soooo many toys that its ridiculous...as a parent I have to say I loved the cash for her savings acct. and savings bonds. I know you probably want to get the BEST toy, but its an idea!
She loves to take it by the string and pull it while she crawls around. She also loves having me pull it while she chases it. It's a great toy to foster a child's developmental urge to pull or push things.
the Parents Magazine drum and musical instrument set was Max's favorite and most used present, here's a link. it's cheaper at Target, but Target is blocked at work so I'm linking Amazon.

Re: What is the best 1 year birthday present you got?
I forget exactly which of these were Christmas (2 weeks before their birthday) and which birthday, but my boys' best gifts at that age were:
* dump truck and schoolbus filled with Mega Blocks
* Duplo set
* play kitchen
* Little People barn and tractor sets (they now also have the airplane, schoolbus and garage and really love playing with them)
* Rock Ride n Roll trike (they grew into it around 18m)
* Kangaroo Climber
* Little Tikes swings for the back yard
* peg puzzles (simple Melissa and Doug ones)
* board books, of course
And they like any toy cell phones, electronic key chains, etc.
the wrapping paper and boxes!!!
