DH and I are trying to remember how we did things the first time.
I BF'd and we just thawed my frozen milk in warm water thus making the milk warm, but we can't remember what we did for the bottles that were in the fridge...?
We set the whole bottle in a cup of warm water or ran it under warm water. I think mostly just to take the chill off the milk not really to heat it up.

I don't think you need one. We did use ours both to thaw frozen milk, as well as to warm bottles. Ours had a sensor on it so the milk never got hot. I loved it and the convenience of it, but the need for it is questionable.
I thought this was one of those gadgets that you didn't actually need, but we found that it was really useful. I BFed, but when B was with the sitter and took a bottle, he didn't want it unless it was warm, and a bottle warmer was much quicker than warming it in hot water when he was hungry and impatient. I guess it's all about preference, though.
We didn't have one, but once DD started daycare, she would only take bottles if they were really warm like they heated them at daycare. We started heating up mugs of water in the microwave so they were hotter than they came out of the faucet and putting her bottles in those (once the mug was out of the microwave) to warm them.
