Onsie Help

So I should finish my registry soon...and fix everything that Buy Buy Baby added.

How many onsies are really needed?  I am having a winter baby, so give your opinions on short and long sleeve onsies, and how many I should get of each.  And do you even use them?

A CW swears that she still puts her 2 year old in them daily, and another one says that she only used them the first few months.

Re: Onsie Help

  • We most certainly did not ever use as many as we had.  We had a summer baby so I figured he would be in them all the time, and he really was not.  Plus, because he grew so fast by the time we tried to wear them, he had already outgrown them.  If I had to do it over, I would not register for as many because people will buy cute ones anyways even if they are not on the registry and they are relativley inexpensive if you do need to get more.  Now that it is getting cooler, I dress him in one before bed, but I will not ever use the ones in the drawer in this size.  DS was 9 pounds at birth so there were a lot we had to put away that he never could fit into when we brought him home.  You may want to register for a few sizes and then keep extras in packages, so you can exchange if you need to.

I dont think I will be using them when DS is 2 that is for sure!

  • Landon was a spring/summer baby and he lived in onsies and diapers for a good 2 months at least. I still put him in onsies, he just wears pants too now since it is cooler.

When we first brought him home we would put him in long sleeved onesies and swaddle him for night time. I though he'd be too hot in a sleeper and the swaddle. It also made for less snaps/work when we were changing him 50,000 times/night. An added benefit of the long sleeved ones is that many of them have the feature of folding over the sleeves to cover their hands if you have a baby that is prone to scratching itself.

Now that it is cooler, I tend to put a lighter white onsesie under whatever he is wearing for extra layers. Also, if he is wearing a t-shirt it helps keep his belly covered if the shirt rides up.

  • We used them ALL the time and still do. At first we used sleepers most days b/c it was easy but for going out she is usually in a onesie and pants/skirts/jeans/shorts..... I would say that 50% of her wardrobe is onesies still.

We also have white onesies for the month pictures and for layering.

  • We use onesies still and my DS is 9 months.  The long sleeved ones for winter are great.  Carters usually has great deals on them, and Kohls.
  • I liked using onsies everyday when DS was just born.  I probably used them up until that first summer (he was born in the fall).  A lot of the newborn outfits, especially sleepers, are pretty thin, so I mainly used them to layer.

  • We used a lot of onesies and still do.  I like that they stay tucked into the pants, especially when they are really little and not sitting up on their own.  I hated when a shirt would ride up.  I hardly ever layer because I'm convinced she's hot, so for winter I would go for the long sleeved ones.

That being said, I didn't register for any clothes at all.  People love to buy clothes and will usually buy what they want anyway.

Two things we couldn't live without when DD was first born- sleepers and snap-front onesies.  Gerber makes some long sleeve snap front onesies that were the only things that would fit her for about the first month (she was pretty small though when she was born- 4 pounds).  I loved anything that did  not have to go over her head as I was terrified of hurting her (and she hated it).  Also hated hoods until she could sit up on her own.  They looked cute but were a pain and seemed like they are always choking her or getting all bunched up when you held her or when she was lying down.

  • I love onesies, we still use them a lot. I would recommend a pack of 4 of each size. Newborn, 0-3, -3-6, 6-9, 12. Thats what we did and it worked out perfectly. Also, I would just wash the newborn ones and see if you even like them. Then if you do, you can wash the others and open them as needed.

Also, I highly recommend the side snap shirts instead of the onesies for the first few weeks. DS's umbilical cord became really irriated by the onesie pressing on. So we quickly switched to the side snap t shirts and that seemed to do the trick.

Overall, I really dont think you can go wrong with onesies. Dont buy an abundance of them, but a few of each size would be good. Like Julie mentioned they are good for taking pictures of the month milestones if nothing else.

  • My DD was born in November and we used the side snap t-shirts a lot!  They were so nice for diaper changes, less blowouts, etc.  We used long sleeve ones for the first few months and then switched to short sleeve.  I would say if you get 6 of each size, that would be a good supply.

  • DD was born in the summer, and we didn't really use the plain onesies at all when she was a newborn. We did use some long and short sleeved ones in the winter under her pjs. I didn't use them under her clothes last year (and I won't this year) because it makes diaper changes difficult (and we spend most of our time in the warm house, so she didn't really need them).

I would recommend any onesies that snap on the sides (kimono style) because they are easier to get over wobbly baby heads, and make changing blowouts much easier!! We threw away several onesies that I had to cut off of DD (didn't want to pull them over her head with poop all over them!!)

  • We didnt really use the white onesies.  Carters makes decorative onesies that people bought us and were easy enough for us to just put pants over and go.  DS was born in March so it was cool but not winter.  He spent most of his time in one piece jumpsuits that just unsnapped between his legs and a blanket.  I did use the kimono ones for a while until his cord fell off.

And I'm not sure if it is just for us, but we found that Gerber runs really small.

  • We used them a lot ... and for a long time. My DD would wear them almost daily during the fall and winter (after she was born in April) for layering, especially at night underneath her PJs. She's petite, so her pants were always falling off her diaper. The cloth-on-cloth with the onesie/pants literally kept her pants from falling on the ground.

Also ... when she turned 2, she went through a pull-off-my-diaper-during-my-nap phase ... so I would stick her in them again because she couldn't undo the snaps.

Because you have no idea how fast they'll grow (my 2 1/2 year old still fits into 18 month pants) ... it's easier to buy as you go.

  • Here's what I would have needed for one baby based on what we've actually used in the first six months.  Get a week's worth (5-10) of each of the following:

newborn sized short and long-sleeved (with mitten ends) t-shirts with snaps on the side for wearing at least until the belly-button heals

    swaddling blankets

Newborn, 3-6, and 6-9 month sizes:

sleepers (preferrably ones that zip instead of snap)

    long and short-sleeved onesies

sweatpants to go over onesies (check mom-2-mom sales and consignment shops--they don't sell these in stores much separate from outfits)

socks in solid cream and/or pink or blue

We also put the babies in regular little outfits when going out or having people over, but this is what they have typically worn at home and now in daycare.

Oh, and sleep sacks (just one or two, long-sleeved and sleeve-less)!
