Cloth Diapering

Future Stash?

My daughter isn't a heavy wetter even at night and she doesn't really have explosions anymore.  I have been researching CDs and the Flips seem to be the best of both worlds in my opnion.  I originally had looked at gdiapers but because they aren't AIO sizing it turned me away from it.  I also heard that some people just get a bumgenius extra pod and put it in with the flip insert at night time with no leaks.. My daughter isn't in daycare, but if eventually if she is Flips do have the velcro option so we woulnd't have t completely change systems, or we could bumgenius because they are made by the same company.  CDs are just way more cost efffective and they will pay for themselves in a short amount of time.

My daughter maybe goes through 2-5 diapers (disposables) in a 24 hour period.  So not alot, I was thinking ifI had this:

4-7 Flip snap AIO diapers

8-14 Inserts

4-7 bumgenius dry pods (for doubling)

some of there disposable options for just in case

bumgenius bumspray

bumgenius cloth wipes 24 ct or more

2 wetbags, shower for toilet, cloth wipes pouch

Would that be a good start?  After I bought one and did a trial period of course.

Re: Future Stash?

  • Wow...2-5 diapers a day?  Indifferent

I know you said she isn't a heavy wetter, but I would probably still plan on changing her every 2-3 hours in a CD.

Flip doesn't have a velcro option that I'm aware of, so as long as you're ok with snaps that's not an issue.

I assume by Flip AIO you mean the covers?  Flip doesn't have an AIO diaper.  4-7 sounds good, I'd lean more towards 7 so you aren't doing laundry everyday.  I'd also go with closer to 24 inserts....remember you'll be changing more often than you did with sposies.  Not sure what you mean by dry pods...like extra inserts?  If she's not a heavy wetter you may not need any doublers, but it's good to have a few on hand.

  • Okay I should have clarified, if it is poopday (where she poops a bunch in one day) obviously it is more.  But usually She gets changed when she gets up and that is around 9-10 in the morning so (#1) then she usually will take a short nap after playing and eating and smetimes she will wet while she aslseep but usually not, so we can usually get through a couple more hours until she wets or poops and pees again so (#2) it is usually alreaedy around 3 in the afternoon.  Then before bedtime around 9-10 at night there is usually 1-3 diapers in that six hour time.  I am guessing also that she pees in the bath everynight so we catch one not in a diaper.  On poop days we had maybe2-4 more diapers.  When I analyze it seems like she doesn't wet that often which is funny because she drinks milk and water like crazy.. She rarely gets anything but milk and water to drink, she also eats like a horse.

I thought that Flip had the velcro but it was bumgenius who does...I dont really care for the velcro anyways, I like the snaps they seem like they are more durable.

I also forget to say that when you buy a flip diaper it comes with its insert, so techincally if I got the bigger amount and I would really have 14 inserts..Would I need more..Even with changing more often, and maybe doing laundry everyother day or everyday??

  • I guess I'm so used to having to change a newborn diaper all the time...going through 12-15 a day that it seems hard to believe anyone could go through so few.  I do have a heavy wetter though.

You could certainly try 14 inserts a day and see how it goes.  If you find you're doing laundry too often you just get more...way easier than trying to sell them if you have too many.  A good rule of thumb with the covers is one a day for every poop since you can usually reuse cover if it's just pee.  So if LO poops on average once a day you'd need 2/day...or 4 total, bare minimum, if you want to wash every other day.  I'd probably throw in an at least one extra just to be on the safe side.

  • Yes I meant the covers being that they are One Size.  Th dry pods are yes like doubler inserts that through researh says is good for night with the flips for just in case.  I was thinking we would probably need more inserts.  I was thinking maybe if we increased thenumber of inserts to 24 total inserts, and 8 or so covers.  I have read that unless there is a blowout usually you can get away with only using 2 covers in a day as long as you wipe them out.  That would do 3-4 days with covers (plan on washing every other day or so) and if there were 24 inserts and in the 14 hours of awake time in a day we would go through 4-8 inserts, sotaking 8 inserts that would get us 3days until we had non left.

  • Oh I remember the newborn to 6 month diaper changing too.. 10-15 diapers a day was what we went throuh too.

  • Yeah I don't know if solid food poop makes a difference or not...but I wouldn't re-use one of our flip covers at this point.  The thought of wiping it out is kind of gross to me since it's pretty much everywhere...it's much easier to just get a new one.  Haha.

I've been using the organic inserts at night.  A little too bulky for my taste during the day, but amazing at night.  If you do use a BG doubler I assume it's microfiber so just make sure it's under the stay dry insert....MF is not good for baby skin.

  • I will admit I didn't read the whole thread, so pardon me I am repeating something.  I switched DD over to cloth at 17 months.  We used 4-6 diapers a day.  We moved to CDs and the number of diapers I used doubled.  She peed a lot more than I realized.

This for us...had no idea what the chemicals were capable of holding in sposies.  We can go through anywhere from 10-14 cds where the sposies were 5-7 daily.

  • Thanks everyone!  It was very helpful.  For right now we are just going to order a trial pack that has two shells and 6 inserts and see how it goes and add on as we need too.  Thanks again, it is just so much cheaper to do CDs.
