Pap smear after baby? Problems b/c of c-section?

When did you have one?  At your 6 week check-up?  Did your doctors have any problem getting to your cervix?

I had one at my 6 week pp check-up.  The results came back abnormal.  Today I went back for a 2nd pap smear and biopsy and the doctor said the problem was she couldn't even get to my cervix because it moved (from the c-section).  She said that would explain the "abnormal" result - they couldn't get enough of a sample.

So now I have to have an ultrasound to see if there is a problem and then do the pap smear in the operating room under sedation (so they could go really far in without me screaming in agony).

Just curious if anyone else had any problems/issues with the pap smear after baby?

  • I have never heard of that. It's weird to me that c/s could cause problems with the cervix since nothing went throughout there KWIM? Seems like a vaginal birth would be rougher on it! Hmm.... Odd. Anyway GL I hope it turns out to be nothing!

  • I won't have one until Feb.  I would be due in November, but my doctor said she sees too many abnormal results before 6 months after delivering.  Her standard practice is to see her patients for a pap 6 months after their 6 week check up (so like 7.5 months after delivering)  I had a c/s, there was no mention of a problem with my cervix and I don't really see how the c/s (if done properly) would move it

That is comforting to me - about your doctor's practice because others got false abnormal results.

I wonder if the fact I had a tilted uterus to begin with caused this particular problem - I know it was always hard to do pap smears because of it - I should ask the doctor when I go back since no one thinks it should be affected by the c-section.

  • My doctor said to wait six months afterwards as well. She said there was no point in doing one before, as things won't be back to normal. I am not sure what I'd do in your situation. You're probably worried now that there's an "abnormal" result, but it seems likely that the abnormal result is just because of you still healing, and probably isn't a real problem. Maybe just refuse the procedure and wait a few more months and try again?
  • The same thing happened to me!  I got a pap at my 6w check-up, and the results came back "no result".  Let me tell you how thrilled I was to have to go back and do it again.

Thankfully they were able to get more of a sample the second time.  Good luck with your proceedure.  Sounds miserable.
