Video Monitors?

I hear a lot of people saying that they couldn't have lived without their video monitor. Why? Our house is one level and pretty small, so I can't see where a video monitor would be that helpful, although I fully admit to having never seen one being used before. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything important!

Sometimes I hear DD fussing in her room.  If I open the door, she can hear it, then she pops her head up and if she sees me then she cries to be picked up.  If I look on the video monitor and see that she is just fussing about, then I can leave her. If she looks like she is stuck, then I can go tend to her.

I plan to get one because I know that I am going to periodically want to peek in on our LO to make sure that she is still breathing. As a new mom it is easy to worry. Video monitors make it possible for you to see that you little one is ok and moving without having to open the door and disturb there sleep. I don?t think that they are absolutely necessary but for me the peace of mind that it offers will be worth it.

We got one for our baby girl due in December and have been using on our 2 year old- it's awesome to be able to see what's going on in the room without having to open the door to look, and we've caught our DD trying to sneak out of bed... is it necessary?  no... but, is it useful- definitely!!

Thanks! I never thought about me disturbing him when I open the door to check on him. I think I will look into getting one after all.

I didn't have a video monitor for DD's whole life (1 year) but I bought two last month, that I'll be using when the new baby gets here. There have been a TON of times where I think she's sleeping but she's not, or that I think she's awake but she's not, and it's too dangerous to open the door to check (i.e. she'd see me and want to get up).
