To jogging stoller or not to jogging stroller...

... That is my question for all the running moms out there...

How often do you actually go running with LO in a jogging stroller?

DH and I are considering getting a second, heavier duty stroller to compliment our BJ City Mini.  DH wants a stroller with all the bells and whistles, like an Uppa, Bugaboo, or Britax B-Ready.  However, I'm a runner and I think I might want a jogger like the BOB Revolution or the BJ Summit XC... But I keep wondering how often I will actually take LO out jogging with me.  Pre-baby, running was always my destressing "escape time", and I never liked having a lot of "stuff" with me when I ran.

I'm just not sure if I will actually want to run with LO, or if I'm going to prefer doing my runs alone once DH gets home from work (of course, I still plan on taking LO out on walks during the day to get some fresh air).  Plus, I want to start running again ASAP, but that's probably going to be in the middle of winter when I may not want LO outside in a stroller for that long.

Any thoughts or advice?

  • I hope this helps! :) My Best Friend has a bob that she bought when her daughter was 4 months. She didn't start running with her in it till 7months old, but now runs 3-4 times a week with her.

She used it a lot to walk with baby in infant seat, and then sitting before 7 months. She said her Dr. did not rec. running with her daughter till at least 6 months.

I had heard this, too (although I have a friend who was already running with her newborn in a jogger a month after he was born - SHE wasn't even cleared to run yet, let alone with her baby).

  • I have a BOB Revolution and I love it. I'm currently training for a half marathon, but I only take DS out with me twice a week. That is as much a function of making my workouts work with work though. You said though that you were a runner and you would like to start again asap so I would say that you will probably use it. Since you said you will probably start running again in the winter you can hold off on deciding until spring if you want. That's what we did and got our BOB in May.

When you say you are getting a second "heavy duty" stroller what is your original stroller?

You might want to try looking at Craigslist, they are always on CL around here. My girlfriend just got one that was practiacally brand new for half price.

  • I take my dd on jogs probably 2-4 times a week. She loves the fresh air and it calms us both down.

While it slows my time down and it is not as easy to 'just get lost in the run', I do enjoy showing her how much fun fitness can be. There have been be a jog or two where she has fallen asleep. :-)

That said, I think pp were right in saying that maybe waiting until spring will be the best bet.

I use my jogging stroller only as a jogger. I do not take it places with me. I do have a city mini and it is my in-and-out stroller, I also have a Bugaboo frog that I LOVE and use it the most. For the next baby I plan on getting a Bob double jogger and probably another more compact double.

  • I am holding off until spring for the following reasons:

    1) It is not recommended that you jog with a child under 6 months.

    2) By the time I get cleared to run again, it will be fully winter here, and I will be mostly stuck on the treadmill (they don't exactly plow my neighborhood)

    3) I am waiting for garage sale season.  My mom scored an barely used jogger for $25 for her house.

    4) I want to test out running with my mom's stroller before I buy.  I'm not sure I will like not having freedom to move my arms when I run.
