DH and I live in his mom's house currently. When she passed away we were renting a townhome and it just made sense for us to move in her house since it was paid for and save the money on rent. Well... we have lived here for a year now and it's just not working out. We have tried to make it work but the house is small. It's a really nice house, we had it completely painted and the hardwood floors refinished in the entire house when we moved in, a huge deck added, the yard fenced etc... but with only 1 bathroom and a TINY kitchen that doesn't even have a dishwasher I am at the end of my rope. I feel like every time I want to do anything I have to dig it out of the closet or go in the attic or the shed to get it because there is no room! We are thinking about putting our house on the market in the spring. I have always lived on the east side of town and so has DH. But, he works in Hebron at Toyota and I am hoping to be a stay at home mom some day. We are considering a move to NKY to help with his commute. All of our friends and family live on the east side so we are hoping to stay central to both the Eastgate/Amelia area as well as Hebron. Let me know what areas I should be looking at!! I am LOST in KY so I have no idea. We will probably be looking in the $175-200k range.
TIA!

Re: Where in NKY to live?
We live in Campbell Co. (Cold Spring to be exact) and we LOVE IT! I have lived all over Campbell County and really liked every neighborhood I've lived in (Highland Heights, Ft.Thomas, Newport, Bellevue & now Cold Spring). Whats nice is that it is a quick drive to the Eastgate/Amelia area and not too far from Hebron (about a 20 min drive). A huge plus also is that you are right near 275 (straight shot to both hebron and eastgate) and 471 which is WAY less congested/traffic-y than 71/75 and its a straight shot into Cincy
One big draw for us also is that we wanted to live somewhere with a little bit of land and somewhere that felt like we werent "in the city" we were able to find a great house that has over an acre and is nice and private yet we have neighbors still close by and are a quick 10 min drive to the highway--a good combo of country and city so to speak
The school districts are pretty decent (I cant speak from personal experience but I researched this some before we bought and the schools were pretty good--the elementary school up the street from our house is a blue ribbon school). I would definitely recommend looking in any area w/in this county (I would say anything south of Alexandria though you are getting to be more of a hike to both Eastgate and Hebron) GL!
ETA: I would guess that there will be a LOT of houses to choose from in the $170-200 range and a good variation between older and newer houses (and some new developing sub divisions)
I 2nd Cold Spring.
We live in Alexandria (just south of Cold Spring) in the Maplestreet Homes Summerlake division. I love it! Our neighborhood is full of young families and will be a great place for our babies to grow up. We also love the fact that this a brand new house of course...
But we are 2 minutes from Walmart, 6 minutes from Kroger, Home Depot and Kohls and really close to a lot of smaller shops too. There is also a ton of open land here and I'm sure in the next 10 years this will be developed quickly.
Good luck!
The house next door is for sale... want to be my new neighbor? LOL
Seriously Taylor Mill, Cold Spring, Florence all have tons of options (both new homes and older ones depending on your tastes) and are close to 275. Fort Thomas is more expensive and are supposed to have good schools and you might be able to find a smaller house in that range, but the taxes are much higher. I think anything further off 275 is going to mean longer commutes to the east side.
I live in Alexandria and we love it, but it might be a little further than you like. As Sky mentioned the Campbell County schools are decent and mostly newer schools (not all though) and therefore more tech advanced. I graduated from there. It takes about 15 to 20 mintues down the AA to hit 275 or 471. We love it, because it is somewhat city, somewhat country. Quiet and beautiful!

I was also going to say that Ft Thomas is pretty central to the eastside and Hebron, and actually my brother and SIL live there because he commutes downtown for work while she commutes to Hebron (just hop on the interstate and it's no biggie)--however like Kristen said, a new home or just a home with a lot of space can be pretty $$ in Ft Thomas, as well as Ft Mitchell.

I would love to stay on the east side and we very well may! I just wanted to open up our search to include NKY. Which neighborhood do you live in? Some of the subdivisions we have looked at are just too crammed and I can't imagine living on top of my neighbor!
DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.
I vote for Ft. Thomas, we love it here
But, to be honest, pp's are right... if you want a larger home it would be hard in your price range (if you don't want a fixer-upper or a weird location). Yard space is not all that easy to come by either.
But, the schools, the charm & central location can't be beat. We absolutely love it here.
I grew up in Hebron and live in Oakley now...and I sell homes in Cincy and NKY so I've had a lot of clients making these type of decisions. You'll want to stay close to 275, in my opinion, if you are making the move primarily for commute. Florence, Burlington and Union would be close and not on 275 as other options. I think it depends how close you want to be to Toyota vs friends. And whether or not you are concerned about public schools. You also want to consider the type of house you want, newer homes will be farther from downtown Cincy and more on the outside of the "loop".
Some of my suggestions would be: Union, Ft Mitchell, Wilder, Erlanger, Crestview, Ft Thomas and Independence. But again, it'll depend on what you are looking for. The 200k range gives you plenty of options in most of those areas though.
HTH.
Bellevue, Bellevue, Bellevue!
We are westside transplants and love it here! We are pretty close to Eastgate but we really love how close we are to downtown and 71 and 75.
