Tonight I didn't get to have dinner until 10 pm. It was about 6 hours after my last meal and 4 after a snack. I wasn't famished or anything. I ordered a tortilla wrap thingy from a local market DH and I like. I ate the exact same thing on Friday and my number was fine. DH has to be at work at 5 am on Monday mornings so I laid down with him for a little bit before getting up to test. And I fell asleep. I was only 10 minutes late on my testing but it was pretty high (156). So then I thought maybe I got the time wrong and it was 10:30 when I finished eating. So I stayed up watching a TV program that I thought was 30 minutes and instead it was an hour. So I test at 1 am and it's still at 140. That's really odd for me. If I test over 2 hours my numbers continue to decrease, my numbers on my 3 hour GTT were significantly different for the 3 hour than the 2 hour mark. Someone told me to read about the Dawn Effect and I think that's what is going on with my fasting numbers (they go up overnight in response to a growth hormone), but could it really happen that fast? I was only asleep for like 20 minutes.
Re: GD Testing question/dawn effect
Obviously this is just a guess, but I doubt that it's the dawn effect. I think that occurs much later in the night. My guess would be that you ate dinner late and lay down and rested. My post-meal numbers are often high if I just sit after I eat. I really need a 10-20 minute walk or to be really busy around the house for 45 minutes or so for my 1-hour post-meal numbers to be fine. I was told that the walk after a meal really shouldn't be optional and is really important. So far it works for me, so perhaps your higher number was because you were resting and not helping your body burn off that glucose.
GL!
I had a cold the first 2 weeks of testing and was only able to walk once. I walked for 20 minutes and my numbers were the same. I really can't figure out a way for me to walk after dinner. I've even tried to find a walking dvd and at every store they're out (soooo weird!). It gets dark by 7 and it just doesn't work out for me to eat before then. The weekends are also impossible. I'm getting so annoyed by it. My other numbers have been pretty good but I know that if I could fit in more excercise it means I might be able to eat more carbs, haha! It's just weird. I'm allowed 45-60 carbs and that wrap was only 28. Then I ate some rice crackers that I've been using as snacks an that put it at 39. Less than I usually eat and then a crazy high number.
But yeah, I didn't think it could be the dawn effect, though I have tested much later at night (waking up to pee) and trying eating a protein only bedtime snack and my fasting numbers are still high. So they do think that is what's going on overnight, I just don't think it would happen after 20 minutes.
