Anyone use pull-ups during potty training?

I know the whole 3-day potty training theory and everything, but DD is definitely not ready for a potty training boot camp and I'm not about to push it unnecessarily. Anyone have success starting with pull-ups? I know even if we were able to potty train for potty, poops would be another issue and I'm not about to take on cleaning poop out of underwear right now. Nor do I want her pooping in her underwear at preschool and getting teased or something.

Especially with her language delay, I want to take a more 'baby-step' approach for her for the here and now and thought pull-ups could be a step in the right direction...but they seem obsolete in bump-land.

Re: Anyone use pull-ups during potty training?

  • Well we are one of the very few that are currently using Pull-Ups in our PTing adventures. For us, it was to get the boys used to pulling them up and down. They have mastered that of course, so I'm not too sure where we stand on the next 'big' step. And to each their own, it works for us based on the temperaments and where the boys are developmentally. It's worth a shot, IMO.

  • We did and we used them for a long time.  Just this weekend she is now in underwear only and the only pull ups she now uses are at night.  It has been a long road but the speech delay was a big part of why it took so long for us.

  • I used pull-ups during different phases of each of my kid's pt.  For Cami, they were a training tool, but for Tyler they were more of a crutch.

Cami used them only briefly and as a backup while out & about and overnight.  She kept them dry while she was awake and had issues going #2 on the potty, so she would request a pull-up for BMs for a few weeks before making it over that hurdle.  She was always great at staying dry during naps & nighttime, too.

Ty is another story... he would intentionally pee in a pull-up rather than making a trip to the potty (even at home) knowing he could - and sometimes would pee in his undies (lazy? forgetful?).  We're still battling with overnight bed wetting and are just recently out of pull ups during the night.

btw, Cami was completely out of pull-ups at 2yr 8mo & Ty was still using them overnight until 4yr 3mo.  He even asked for one tonight.  I keep a few stashed away just in case we have a regression, but I didn't give in this evening.

  • It was weird, DD#1 would "go" in a pull up.  So we didn't end up using them.
  • Yes, we did and I attribute our eventual success to them- the Diego disappearing backpack ones to be exact (TG for those). Ty got the idea of potty training but didn't have the poop-on-the-potty thing down. After cleaning out the hundreth pair of poopy drawers I went to pull ups until he was really ready for undies.

PTing was not easy for us. It was a nightmare. I wouldn't say we are "done" but we've made HUGE progress and only use pull ups for nights now.
