Nurseries and Baby Gear

When did you do your nursery?

I am 21 weeks pregnant with our first baby. We just started the nursery this weekend and bought a couple small things. We painted the walls too.

I guess I will go ahead and say it, I am afraid to do the nursery. I went through a late m/c before this and one of the hardest things for me were the few items we had for the baby.

My honey thinks I am being morbid but I am afraid to have a completed nursery and no baby. He always reassures me that nothing will happen to her and we have seen her on so many u/s in addition to hearing her heatbeat. Am I being completely insane?

When did most of you really start your nursery? I know it will take a while to finish so I guess baby steps are ok at this point. We did start our registry b/c people were already buying stuff for us and we wanted them to have a guide of what we were doing.

Re: When did you do your nursery?

  • I have the bare basics in there, but my shower is at 35 weeks so I will shop for the rest of what I need then and finish it.

With that said, the baby won't be in there right away, so it's okay if it's not 100% by the time he or she arrives.

  • I started the nursery around 20 weeks and just finished it this last weekend.  I understand your concern, I had 2 mc's prior to this pregnancy and you will always worry about the "what if's".  But, you just have to stay positive and take it a day at a time- just keep telling yourself "today my baby is healthy and I'm going to accomplish this....".  Good luck!

  • MIL recently sent us a crib and we have the bedding.  We were going to set up the crib today but lately I've started having some pretty irrational fears about m/c (I've had an early m/c, no indication there was any problem carrying a baby) so I think we'll wait a little longer.  I keep imagining coming home from the ER or hospital after a m/c and looking in on the finished nursery.  I figure after our big u/s at 19.5 weeks we'll start.
  • We have bought a few little things here and there. Of course we bought a few boy PJ's and outfits when we found out it was a boy. :) As far as the nursery, we ordered the crib last weekend (but it takes 12 weeks to arrive, so it's not here). We haven't ordered any of the other furniture (dresser, glider, etc.) since the ones we like are all available in stores and don't have to be ordered.

Good luck... stay positive (I know, easier said than done!) Wink

  • I'm sorry to hear about you m c. :( mc's are always tough. But I personally think the later ones have an added level of difficulty. That being said. Late miscarriages are rare. Now days with so much technology available. Most babies born after 25 weeks live. And some can live sooner. It soundsike you ar being monitored closely? Would this mean that IF there was a problem you could possibly be given steroids and induced soon? I know none of that is related to your nursery. I'm just trying to point out that you're getting far enough along that IMO. The level of worry could reduce! I'm 26 wks and still fret now and then. But I know that the chances of something happening. Are so so small! I would continue to work slowly on the ursery IF YOU WANT TO. If it stresses you out just wait! Honestly it could be put together in a matter of days or weeks. So if you think it will make you happy to do it now. Do it. If its going to streSs you out. Sav the stress for somehing more important Also. I hve been collecting things for our nursery but haven't started decorating. (More because we might be moving than anything tho) I haven't even considered not doing it because the chance of mc Good luck :) .

We started ours with the basics at 25 weeks. This is our first pregnancy/ child so we didn't know what to expect but figured the baby could be a very small preemie after this point so we went ahead and set it up. It's not finished but we're getting there!

  • Thanks for all of your input. I think we will probably wait until I am 24 weeks to do a lot of the stuff b/c babies born after that period do have a chance of surviving. I have had several people tell me to make sure that at least the things we need right after she gets home are done. That way you are not trying to set them up with a newborn baby screaming!

And yes I am being monitored closely and there have been no problems so far. I just get scared. I know that it is irrational at times but last time it never crossed my mind and I was so devestated when it happened. I wish I was enjoying this pregnancy a little more and not so worried all the time.

I know it will all be so worth it in the end. I can't wait to hold our little girl!

    Thanks again.

  • At the very least, I'd order your furniture. I ordered mine at 20 weeks and it didn't get there until 38. Thusly, I've only just finished my nursery. Good thing I'm overdue.
  • I know where you are coming from. we painted it I was 34 weeks? We ordered the furniture when I was 27 weeks pregnant. I am getting the furniture on wednesday. I wasnt to worried about it. the baby isnt even in the nursery for a while. We just put up the changing table 2 weekends ago and just go the chair last on saturday. I got the bassinet 2 weeks ago. I am holding off on the bedding. I have a girls bedding and a boys bedding picked out. I will order it when baby comes.

I didnt have a shower but did a registry. So I think I was 30 weeks when I started getting stuff. I just put it all in my basement. I didnt take it out until a few weeks ago. I was very scared too.

you are not insane. I still get afraid that something is going to happen. its understandable. I always thought i would jinx myself. but so far all is ok.

stay strong and do what you feel in your heart. I didnt do anything until I felt ready.

  • I know how you feel I had a m/c too( 1st pregnancy).. mine was early but I still worry.. I worried through my pregnancy with ds and this one as well. Its normal to worry.

With ds we started the nursery around 33/34 weeks as we moved across country when I was about 20 weeks..We did not even order the furniture until I was 30 weeks.

This time I started earlier as we are settled into a house now.. I am 33 weeks and I finished 2 weeks ago. of corse we already had the furniture ( just had to get new stuff for ds which we did first) I got sick at the end of my pregnancy last time so I wanted to be done earlier just in case.

personally I would aim to be done around 34 weeks.

  • Wow, I feel like an early started. After 12 wks we started, we buy here and there as the budget allows. We had already painted the room the color I had wanted it several months before - but it's very modern so no one would have known it was for a baby.

  • I think it is completely understandable you being scared to commence the nursery due to your last m/c... I'm so sorry for your loss.  However, like your dh said, you need to stay optimistic and enjoy the pregnancy!

Since wk 22 we started searching for furniture... which was quite the ordeal for us, but finally got delivered this weekend.  DH painted the room about 2 wks ago, and we had the wainscotting installed over the weekend.  We now have a semi-ready room for our boys!  I think in our case, since it is twins, we are a bit late in the game.

I think at 21 wks it is perfectly find to start doing little things.  GL!

  • I've been slow with the nursery because I'm nervous too.  I had an early m/c previously, but even now, I worry about every ache and pain...and there are a lot of those during normal pregnancy!   We ordered the furniture at 26 weeks and we've painted the nursery.  That's about it.   I've picked out everything I want online, but haven't bought one thing. Literally the only thing I have bought for this baby is a giant giraffe!
