Baby Names

Delphine

I know this name won't be everyone's cuppa tea ;) that's fine...I'm not even PG yet but I keep coming back to this. I love the sound, the origin, the feminine quality, etc... but what I can't get past is I imagine this on a blond haired, blue eyed little girl, which my future daughter will most certainly NOT be....

DH thinks I'm crazy and that people (or babies anyway) don't look like any names.

Anyone have similar issues with any names and what have you done? Should I scratch this one or try to get over the preconceived image in my head? Could you picture a dark Delphine?

TIA!

  • I definitely agree that certain names "look" like people.

And I find it strange that you think of Delphine as a blonde name, because its distinctive French-ness makes it a definite dark-haired, olive-skinned (maybe blue-eyed) name.

By the way, I love Delphine, and I think it's awesome that you're considering it. It's so pretty!

Maybe it's because I know someone named Ella who is blonde- the names have a similar sound in the beginning....but, really, who knows why I think the way I do ;)

    And I agree- I think it's gorgeous!

  • i agree with everyone else...

while some names conjure up a certain look in my mind, delphine does not make me think of a blonde haired, blue-eyed person.

  • I think the same thing, but it also immediately makes me think of my aunt Daphnie who is dark blonde with brown eyes.

I had the same problem though with the name Iris, I can't help but think blonde haired blue eyed little girl, but I think if you love the name you should go for it anyway. The name will grow on her.
  • I love love love Delphine!  So pretty.  I actually don't picture a blondie with bllue eyes at all.  I see big dark brown eyes and dark hair.

I wish my husband liked this name.

I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • DH's grandma is Delphina, and in her youth had dark hair & brown eyes.  It's a traditional Italian/Mediterranean name, so I associate it with those physical characteristics - certainly NOT blonde & blue-eyed!

  • For me, Chloe has to be a blond, preferably with curls. And Polly must be a redhead. I have others, but I wont go on and on: )

I'm not sure how you get around that kind of perception exactly, but I do think if you really loved the name enough, you'd want to use it despite any preconceived notion about it. The name would simply be the one. If you're not having that feeling, perhaps it's not meant to me. You might find something else will strike you.

One thing I've learned is that with every pregnancy, my "favorite" names form our list have been different, even though all the names on our list are there because I love them. You might find you change your mind about Delphine when you're actually pregnant.

  • I knew a woman named Delphina (goes by Fina).  I hate to say that I don't know where she was from, but I believe it was Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic.  Anyhow, she was a beautiful woman with dark hair, eyes & skin.
