My honey and I bought and remodeled a home last year and **I** insisted on all hardwood throughout the house, including the bedrooms.
I am regretting that decision quite often lately! I am concerned about her crawling on the floors and how hard they will be. Does anyone else have any experience with this? We have area rugs but they can't cover everything.
I also find it painful to walk on the floors the bigger I get with the pregnancy. I am dreading this winter!
I am mad at myself b/c this was one the most expensive things we did in our home and it pretty much cant be changed now. I had hardwood for years and never thought I would want carpet again but I didn't have children then!
Re: Anyone else have all hardwood floors
We don't have any carpet, aside from a few area rugs (bedrooms, living room, etc). She did some weird, modified crawl where she scooted on her butt...not sure if it was because it hurt her knees to crawl on the hard floors. She walked more on carpet and the foam mat in the play area, and was more hesitant on the hard floors (after falling several times)...but now she's running everywhere. I don't regret it, I think it's much cleaner...esp with a baby, a dog an a cat! Your LO will be fine!! We're not changing a thing for baby #2.
Plus, you will be very happy to have hardwood floors when your baby pukes, pees, poops, smooshes food, spills juice, etc on your floors!!

The folks we bought our house from are in the hardwood floor biz. We have them EVERYWHERE -- including the kitchen. Gorgeous, though, and very easy to clean compared to rugs. I haven't found it a problem to walk around on them, though. What are your sub floors made of? And what wood did you use? That might be contributing to the discomfort.
I wouldn't worry too much about the baby. Babies have chubby little legs for a reason -- my brother crawled and walked on tile -- a good deal harder than hardwood, and he's fine. Maybe it'll teach your baby to walk more quickly. An area rug in the nursery should be all you need as well -- we have a 5x8 in our 9x12 nursery.
And, as a PP said, it's so much easier to clean!
Ditto this. We do have carpet in the bedrooms, but the rest of our house is hardwoods and he did fine. He never crawled- did this butt shuffle thing and then just stood up and walked- I'm not sure that the non-crawling was really b/c of the floors- I think he's just weird :-). It was really not even an issue and let me tell you, I was soooooo thankful for hardwoods a couple weeks ago when we were in the throes of potty training. Clean up was so much easier!
I would far far rather have hardwoods than the nasty carpet we have. Carpet is so filthy, no matter what you do; hardwood is much better for allergies and for keeping things clean. We don't put our baby down on the floor unless she's on a blanket.
You could always put baby legs on the baby to cushion against scrapes on the floor, too.
I'd be curious what sort of subfloor you have too, since the hardwood should have a bit of 'give' to it.
Thanks ladies.
I personally like hardwood WAY more than carpet because it does seem cleaner and easier to maintain. After cleaning my floors a few times I was so grossed out by thinking about what was sitting in the carpets that you can not get to!
You are probably right too, I am sure I will be glad we have them when she throws up all over the place! We will be putting a rug in her room but i am happy to hear that none of your babies had a hard time crawling or walking on the floors.
we have all hardwoods [i hate carpet] and i've always lived in houses with wood floors. i would just put area rugs where you think you need them [where you will spend most of the time with the baby on the floor] and enjoy how much easier it is to clean wood floors! carpet is gross because even when it looks clean, it still holds in odors, people's nasty skin flakes, etc. and you end up breathing that in.
we have 3 big dogs who shed constantly and if we didn't have wood floors i don't know what i would do.
We have laminate flooring throughout our livingroom, kitchen and hallways and left carpet in the bedrooms. I was worried about LO crawling out of his/her crib and falling on hard floors, and we live up in the mountains so I thought the carpets would help with our rooms staying a little warmer.
I only have ine medium-sized one, and I don't know where she GETS all the hair I clean up. Love my hardwoods.
