acid waking you up

I know its been talked about on here before but I can't find it. Anyone know what/ if anything can be done for acid at night? I not only get heart burn but I wake up choking with the acid/vomit in my mouth making me cough. I cough until I can get a little out and then it feels better. But its gross and kind of scary because I feel like i can't breath. It wakes me up every night no matter what I eat for dinner. Is this normal? I asked my Dr. and he told me to take Zantac which isn't doing anything. Anyone know of anything else that works? TIA

Re: acid waking you up

  • I ate a ton of Tums.  In one night, I ended up taking 9 or 10 Tums (which is apparently too many).  You can try to sleep elevated, that should help.
  • I sleep propped up on pillows and take tums or pepcid complete as needed.  I mostly take the tums for HB during the day and only resort to the pepcid complete when it get's pretty bad...which is about half of the time...lol.

  • I take a raniditine every evening around 6 pm, and it holds me all night.  It's over the counter, perfectly safe in pregnancy,  and I don't know what I would do without it!

  • It hit me really hard at 28wks.  I was inpatient at that time and the nurse tried Tums on me at first.  It seemed to make it worse... Then the nurses told me, "Oh, everyone on the antepartum floor is taking Pepcid."  I made the switch and it was such a relief.  It was important to take it every 12hrs or the HB came back immediately.  GL, hope you can get some relief!

  • I tried Pepcid and it didn't work for me. I've been using Prevacid for months now...it works pretty well, but I still have some nights where the acid bothers me.

  • I had exactly what you are describing, it was awful.  My SIL suggested a spoonful of vinegar... it tasted AWFUL, but actually seemed to help when nothing else did.  Also, try to eat smaller meals more frequently so you aren't eating too much at one time.  GL!
  • YES!! I feel your pain. This has been a major problem for me as well. It seems to happen no matter what I eat, I have done a few things to help lessen it a bit, I sleep elevated with many pillows, I don't eat too close to bed time and avoid red sauce and  foods with too much acid and spicy.  I also take Zantac 75, my doctor said I can take 150 but I try to stick with the 75 once maybe twice a day.  If it is really bad I will take one to two tums just to take the edge off and I eat a ton of chopped ice just to sooth the throat. This has been a good temp fix for me.
  • Thanks everyone! I didn't realize I can take Pepcid so that will a big help! I never thought of having ice for the throat great idea too! I thought I had heartburn BEFORE pregnancy, I didn't have a clue!!!!! :) Its insane.
  • I got a Rx for Omeprazole 40mg (Prilosec) a few weeks ago.  It has worked great except for a couple nights where I still got mild heartburn.  Those nights I took the Mylanta that is specifically for you if you're on a heartburn Rx.  I hate having my sleep interrupted in addition to all the bathroom breaks!  Ugh!

  • I had the same vomiting/choking on acid. It was awful - tums, pepcid did zero to help. I was Rx'ed Nexium - it made a 100% difference within 24hrs. I had the Rx from about 20 weeks, and didn't fill it until about 32 weeks - I regret not filling it right away - it worked wonders!!!

  • OMG I had this towards the end...it was AWFUL! and scared my dh to death!

I had to watch how much I ate for dinner...and I am talking hours before I would go to sleep. I had to keep my meals very very small and frequent and not eat at least 4 hours before bedtime.

Usually OTC prevacid would be helpful but I found it really depended on the amount of food I ate...if I ate a big meal, it would be really bad. but the smaller the meals...the less it happened or it wouldn't be as severe.

    good luck!
