My SD(7) used to get them pretty bad around that age. She has grown out of it since then, and has only had maybe one in the past year. Night terrors are much different the nightmares because they happen at a deeper stage of sleep, and something is interrupting them during this sleep cycle so they can't quite comprehend what's going on. We limited any kind of stress that might be effecting her, at the time it could have been starting a new school and having to make new fiends, or moving, we also moved up her bedtime and made sure she got plenty of sleep, and had a good strict bedtime routine. These things helped a little. I'm sorry your going through this, I was terrified the first time I went through one with her. Good luck.
My daughter started having them back in April. We found out that her adenoids were swollen and blocked 95% of her nasal passage. She would wake up gasping for air and have a night terror. She was having them every 45 minutes all night long for 2 weeks straight. I found this site. Very helpful! After reading from the site, I decided to wake her.
She still has them practically every single night. Sometimes just one but sometimes it's every hour. For the first one of the night, I just walk in (within second of her first scream) and scoop her up to take her to the bathroom. While she's peeing I clap my hands to wake her up. She always smiles.
Also from that site? It might help to keep your DS's feet uncovered at night. There might be a link with night terrors and over heating.
