Trying to decide what to do

I don't think I mentioned this on here yet although I had it in my FB status the other day.  We had our consultation with the ENT regarding Tyler's ear infections and he is recommending tubes, so we have it scheduled for October 12.

Tyler has been on an antibiotic for his most recent ear infection for 9 days now.  Our ENT appt was on Wednesday afternoon and he had been on it for exactly a week.  The doctor saw some fluid in his ears but said it was "nothing terrible".

This morning when Tyler woke up, he had a fever of 100.4.  I know that's not high, but given the fact that he is on antibiotics, and there was still fluid present after a week, would you call the doctor?  I know this is all going to be taken care of in 11 days, but I hate to think he could be miserable for that much longer.

What would you do if this were your kid?

  • I would call.  Even though it will be taken care of soon you don't want him to miserable for that long.  Hopefully there is something they can give him to help get you through the next couple of weeks.  C just got his first ear infection and it isn't fun!  I hope your little guy feels better soon!

  • I would call the doctor. I know that when Jonah had an ear infections, it was hard enough to wait the 12 hours until the pediatrician's office re-opened - 11 days would have been unfathomable. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I'd call and have it checked out, just in case they can do something to get him through the next 11 days as pain-free as possible.

  • If this is a new fever (ie he hasn't had one in 48 hours), I'd call.  The worst that will happen is they'll tell you he doesn't need to be seen.  I'm wondering if whatever he's on isn't knocking this bug out, perhaps he needs a different antibiotic?
