Toddler beds?

Are they worth it? How long does a child normally stay in a toddler bed for? DS1s crib was mine when I was a baby so needless to say it does not convert to anything, when he's out, he's out! So I have been looking at toddler beds to get some inspiration for his big boy room, but then I got to wondering if it even makes sense to get him one. His room isn't huge, so I'm wondering if we should just put him straight into a twin.

Also, we don't plan on moving him into a bigger bed until he tries to get out of the crib, and he's somewhat tall for his age (everyone thinks he's at least two when they first meet him). So potentially we might not be moving him for another 6 months or so but I'm done with the baby's nursery so I need another room to design [=

Personally, I think they are a waste. We moved DS straight to a twin size bed and he has done fine. It is VERY low to the ground (it's from Land of Nod), but I think he would have been fine even if it wasn't. Even though his room is small, is there any way you could squeeze the big bed in next to the crib for a while? We had DS's set up a LONG time before we ever moved him. My mom bought it on clearance last Christmas and paid for delivery/set up, so I just figured I'd let them go ahead and put it up and we would keep using the crib until he was ready to move. Well, I didn't realize it at the time, but this actually really helped him with the transition! He was already used to the bed being in his room- we sat on it to read books, play, etc. So when the crib disappeared, he didn't totally freak out- just looked for the next soft spot to land on!
