Doppler with twins?

I have on OB appointment tomorrow (first with her... I've been with RE from the beginning until 10 weeks).  I don't think I'll get a u/s, but I'm sure she will listen for heartbeats with a doppler like my last 2 twin pregnancies.

I don't remember from before (it's been over 5 years!)..... is it possible to distinguish 2 separate heart beats on a doppler?  I think I recall my OB being able to find them both before, but I don't remember exactly.  I've read that sometimes it can be too hard to distinguish 1 hb from another, but is it possible?  Did your OB find both heartbeats individually?

Thanks!

Re: Doppler with twins?

  • Depends on the OB.  Mine never bothered with the doppler and went straight for the u/s.  But there are a number that can find them via doppler with no issue.

  • They use the doppler on me when I go and can find both heartbeats. They didn't start looking for both until I was 20 weeks since I didn't find out about my twins until my 19 week u/s. I don't know how easy it is to distinguish the two earlier on.

  • At 11 weeks they were only able to find one of the heartbeats and they took me in for an ultrasound just to be sure :) My doctor told me that it was completely normal not to be able to find both that early. I had ultrasounds just to be sure up until about 16 weeks. Now it really easy to find with the doppler because Baby A is down way low and Baby B is up super high on opposite sides.

  • The nurse found both HB on the doppler today. She found one baby fairly quickly, but it took a little while to find the second HB. There was a very distinct difference between the two. One was in the 170s and the other in the 150s.

  • My doctor wouldn't use the doppler until 12 weeks (if you use it earlier than that she said sometimes it's hard to find the HBs and she doesn't like scaring her patients!), but every time she could locate both babies.

  • Up until 12 weeks, my OB gave me an ultrasound at every appt. Beginning at 16 weeks she was able to find the heartbeats with the doppler every time.

  • My OB doesn't trust the doppler though she has found both with it. She always checks with u/s.

  • I go to my OB once a month and he uses a doppler. Every appointment he's only been able to find one heartbeat. Although he might have found two, but I don't think he could distinguish between one or the other. I also go to a perinatologist once a month for an ultrasound, so they're able to see the heartbeats then.
  • I didn't know I was pregnant with triplets until 17 weeks but after that, my MFM used a doppler at appts when I didn't have an u/s.  He (and his nurse) were able to find 3 different heartbeats.
  • After about 13 weeks I could find both heartbeats with a doppler at home.  Before that was very difficult to distinguish one from another

  • I had an appointment today, and the doctor said that he thought he heard two heartbeats, but he wasn't sure.  He didn't try for very long, but he definitely heard one.  He said it can be very hard to distinguish the two from about 10-12 weeks, but it becomes easier after that.
  • They didn't try a doppler with me until about 2 weeks ago, and we definitely heard two heartbeats at that point.

  • On Tuesday (13w1d) my Dr used the doppler and found both. It was a challenge b/c baby B is a squirmer.

  • Update...  My NP was able to find both heartbeats today!  I was so relieved.  I'm 12w and I didn't know if she'd be able to or not... but she did.  I asked if they were definitely different babies and not the same HB twice, and she said she's 100% sure they were separate, individual HBs.

    Thanks for the input, ladies!!!

  • My OB used the doppler wen I was llw3d and we heard two different heart beats.  I still had an u/s, but the doppler gave us two perfect heartbeat...3 if you count mine!
