S/O Whining...

Tell me about your child's whining.

Here is what Elle does:

She has a brand new toy, plays with it for 15 seconds and then the whine starts very quietly and then it is a on Waaauunnhhhhnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!! Rinse and Repeat.  Until I pick her up or give her a toy.

In the car.  Happy as a clam for the first 15 min. Then she arches her back and Waaauunnhhhhnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!

So do you just let them whine?  Or engage them every time or what?  I don't want her to think that every time she whines she will get anything she wants but I don't think she has any other way of asking?

How are you handling it?

  • In all honesty, I tell Lucy, no whining ( and I sign no crying) if she stops I say good job!

If she doesn't stop and I know there isn't anything wrong with her I let her whine and I go about my business around the house. She either whines a little more and then finds a toy or she crawls around.

But the last few days it's been a lot of whining, it def show s me I need to work on my patience

  • If we are at the house I will try to fix what's wrong. If we are in the car, I'm the one that drives and I won't stop the car for whining. I turn the air vents in the back to her carseat and when she starts that I turn the air up. It's so hot here, I'm sure it's hot in the back of the car for her. Usually, that shuts her up and she's asleep by the time we get home.

This for us too - but we haven't really started signing yet and he isn't crawling. But usually as long as I am out of his sight he will stop fussing for a few until he sees me again. The whining needs to end haha.

If we are in the car - I turn on his music and that usually calms him down. Or I pass him a different toy. I have found if I give him something to chew on while we are in the car - he is okay with a 30 minute trip or so.
