Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Should I feed her?

DD used to sleep up to 7 hours at a time, so I'd only have to get up once a night to feed her and it used to only take 5-10 minutes and then she'd be sound asleep again.

Since I started work on Monday, she hasn't been eating much during the day (she's not used to bottles) and I think she's making up for it at night by getting up 4-5 times a night and feeding for up to 25 minutes per session and still seemingly going to bed still hungry when I finally pull her off (my boobs aren't used to making that much milk at night anymore).

The problem is that she's not actually waking up these 4-5 times a night.  She frantically sucks her thumb while her eyes are still closed.  In the past, if she's not truly awake, I let her suck her thumb until she falls back into a deep sleep on her own.  But now, the sucking seems more frantic and I waited at least half an hour and she still didn't calm back down.

Would you pick her up and feed her?  It's hard for me to tell if she's truly awake and needs feeding or if it's just those night time noises that babies sometimes make before settling back down and I'm actually causing more harm than good by waking her unnecesarily.

(sorry the post is so long)

Thanks!

Re: Should I feed her?

  • If she is truly not eating much during the day I would guess she's reverse cycling and needs to eat at night.  My DD will suck furiously for a long time before she starts wailing if she's hungry, I would bet if you let her your daughter would get to a point when she would actually wake up crying to eat.  I'm sure this will only go until she gets more used to bottles, but in the meantime I would say feed her.
