should I buy a new travel system?

I was thinking about using my DD's car seat/stroller for new LO but when I got it out of storage it had a lot of stains on the pad and straps.  I took it apart last night and washed it, most stains came out but it still looks a little lack luster.

We got some baby furniture that got damaged in shipping so were were credited back exactly the same amount of cash as the new travel system I'm looking at, BUT I'm having a hard time deciding if I should just reuse the existing system, buy the nice new one or maybe buy a new swing that rocks side to side and save the left over money for something else.

I need to take a general poll of what everyone would do to help me decide!

Re: should I buy a new travel system?

  • I would make sure first of all that the carseat is still good and not expired. But I mean when you think of it LO is just going to put more stains on it so why not use it. Im sure you can find something that will take off some more stains. When the time is right buy something new later on. We all know that they will be coming out with new strollers very soon.

  • I agree with PP, if safety isn't a concern, then I would just re-use it but if it is expired, not in great condition structure wise, then I would reconsider.

  • I think they sell covers if the only issue is stains. I know Chicco does. Link

I agree with this. If your current system isn't expired, I would call the company and ask about replacement covers.

  • the only thing I would be most concerned about is the car seat. I was told that sometimes if you are in an accident or it is hit hard it can crack the inside and cause it to become unsafe.. so if you had other furniture get damaged when moving, just be super careful. I would care less about the stains though. It will just get more.

  • hmmm....I'd use your existing infant seat, because they really aren't in them that long.  I'd consider getting a new stroller... but, I would DEFINITELY get the new swing that goes side to side.......
  • Ya, I agree with the other PP's, but understanding wanting a nice new one.  As long as it is still in good (safe) condition, I think you will be happy you didn't buy a new one in the end.  A new one will look the same in about 6 months or so I bet.  You should use the money for something that is truly new ( like the swing).
  • I think the carseat is still in safe condition, just not terribly clean and I know the stroller is beat up from it scratching on the ground when it's folded.  It is a graco from 5 yrs ago but I will definitely check online for any recalls on it.  At first I was worried that the straps might not be as strong because maybe they had mold on them, but everything seemed to come off those so I think it was just old stains that came out during storage.

You guys are probably right though, it's just going to get puked on and look nasty in a few months anyway, so maybe I'll just go with a new swing, he will probably use that a lot more.

  • I thought most seats 'expire' around 5 years.  I'm not sure what the rules are in the USA, but if your seat is 5 years old, it might be worth checking into it's expiry?
