Am I not normal?

I was lurking and this post got me thinking...

https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/43180243.aspx

I was SUPER paranoid the first 2-3 weeks.  Once I got over it I was completely over it.  I never go in his room unless I hear him fussing or crying.  Please tell me there are others out there who don't feel the need to constantly check if their child is still breathing.  The Bump always makes me feel like a neglectful mom.

Re: Am I not normal?

  • Annabelle slept in her crib from the first night. I had to hold myself back from going in there, but really, after that first night, I didnt even think twice about it. I normally dont bother her unless she's crying, and that goes for just about anything she's doing.

  • I've never been that paranoid... I think I checked on her to make sure she was breathing maybe like 2-3 times. Ever.

  • I'm still paranoid at six weeks.

Especially if she isn't making noises in her sleep.

Same here! I have the video monitor and will turn the sound off at times because LO is such a noisy sleeper. I can hear him perfectly with both doors shut if he wants me to hear him.

The only time I panic is if I wake after a solid 6 hours of sleep and have not heard LO. I usually go check on him just to make sure at that point, but that rarely happens.

  • Sometimes I check. But not constantly!

If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done

  • I think a person could go crazy constantly worrying about their LO breathing, etc. I am the same as you. Worried for about 2 weeks and now I only go in her room when she cries. Otherwise I assume she is a-ok!

  • Both my little ones slept in their own room since day one and the only time I was ever paranoid was the first night with my oldest son. I have since not checked unless they were crying. I think you get a lot more relaxed the second time around also.

  • I'm not going to lie- I check on him constantly.  However, we had a scare when he was about 5 weeks.  He woke up gagging on spit up and ended up choking. He couldn't breathe and turned blue before I managed to get it out of him.  (Infant Heimlich is a lifesaver!).  If that hadn't happened I'm sure that I'd be a lot less nervous.

  • I still check on my two year old... I don't think either of us is weird though. Or overly paranoid or negelectful. Just different. My 6 week old DD will probably sleep in our room until she's 6 months and I check in her constant through out the night, I don't know why, I just wake up so I do. if. If I have to get up to use the restroom at night I check on my 2 year old too. I like peace of mind and my mind is a pessimist I suposse ;-)

  • I don't think your neglectful. I only go into his room at night if he's crying. I always wake up when I start hearing him fuss on the monitor but I stay in my room and wait until he actually starts to cry. Alot of the time he will stop fussing after a couple of minutes and just go back to sleep.

  • I'm not paranoid. I feel neglectful at times when I read the bump as well.
