My husband's late paternal grandmother's maiden name was "Brandt". DH wants to name our son after her, and use "Brandt" as a first name. However, it seems like it should be spelled Brant. Changing the spelling takes away from the name's signifigance to him. I'm not super crazy about the name since it's one syllable and our last name is a very simple one syllable name beginning with S. Thoughts? I'm trying to convince myself that I like the name. We can't agree. If only he liked "Carter" as much as I do.

Re: Is this spelling too odd?
If you're naming him after someone, I'd keep the original spelling, but that's just me.
Brandt Carter sounds nice!
I agree
Brandt is a last name. Brant is a first. You can't force him to not lose the significance, but I don't think it loses it to change the spelling. You can still say "we named him Brant in honor of my grandmother".
And really- people are going to think the two of you don't know how to spell if you spell it Brandt.

I like the sound of it...and I'd take it anyday over all the trendy names out there. Maybe give it some time to see if you warm up to it. I can tell you that there are a zillion Carters in my area, but I've yet to meet one Brandt. If you're looking for a unique, not going to be called first name, last-initial...this is it.
And agreed...keeping the original spelling is what makes this an heirloom.

This. All of it.
Also I want to add that you shouldn't worry about the traditional spelling versus the more phonetic spelling in this case. There are times when it does make sense to slightly alter a spelling to clarify pronunciation, but in this case most people are familiar with the name/surname Brandt, and if not, then certainly Rembrandt . . . I think nearly everyone will know how to pronounce it intuitively without altering the spelling.
This.
Brandt was the first name DH ever suggested, back long before we were even married. I like it, but we live in a place where the accent would make it unbearable for me to hear (not being local myself). It would come out more like Bree-andt, all twangy and gross.
I'd also like to point out that Rembrandt was a famous painter long before his surname was used as a toothpaste brand.

I have a friend named Brandt and he spells it this way. To me Brant does not look complete at all. I have never once thought that his parents did not know how to spell, especially considering he is the only person I have ever met with this name.
Hahaha! I didn't even think of the brand . . . I was referring to the artist.
