3rd Trimester

Are you using a bassinet?

We ordered a PNP with a bassinet and changer but DH isn't very impressed with the thin pad and thinks overall it might not be very sturdy/safe.

I've heard a lot of good things about PNPs but Amazon lets you return baby stuff for one year so we can still change our minds. I like the idea that you can use it for a long time but I want my baby to have a comfy place to sleep.

If you're keeping baby in the bedroom at first, what are you using and why?

Thanks!

Re: Are you using a bassinet?

  • We were planning on using a PnP in our room but it was too big for LO and she wasn't comfortable in it (even swaddled she wasn?t comfortable).

We had a bassinet stand that we could use with the bassinet for our stroller (UppaBaby Vista) so we brought that into our room and she is still sleeping in it.

I know lots of babies will sleep in a PnP but K wanted to feel more secure than that.

  • We're using a bassinet in our room.  We have a PNP for the living room but honestly it's too big to put in our room.  That's why we opted for the bassinet.

  • I would keep the PNP.  Like you said, you'll be able to use it for a long time in the future.  A bassinet you'll only be able to use for a few months at the most.  If you don't like the bassinet feature on the PNP, can you take it off and just let the baby sleep in the top part of the PNP?
  • our LO's bed will be a PNP with the bassinet insert until we move in december and can actually set up a nursery.  however, we also purchased a rock n play sleeper (fisher price) to move around the house and take to the grandparents and such because it folds in half.  the fisher price sleeper's weight limit is 25lbs vs. the 15lbs weight limit that the PNP bassinet has so i think it will be worth the money.  however, this is my first so who knows.

  • My niece was born not too long ago so we still have her PnP with the bassinet feature. We also have a fancier moses basket/bassinet they used and gave to us. We will try it out and if LO likes it then great, if not oh well. His nursery isn't just down the hall from us so we don't expect to keep him in our room for long anyways.

  • LCB34,

I looked up your stroller bassinet and it looks a lot more comfortable than a PNP, that's for sure! I guess we better have a Plan A and a Plan B. The nursery is on the other side of the house and we don't want her that far away from us at first. The only downside is that a bassinet can't be used for very long.

Love your siggy pic, what a doll!

  • We have a portable crib that I really like so far. It has three settings that adjust as the baby grows, which means we can keep her in our room for a long longer than we would be able to with a bassinet. Also, it collapses easily if we want to take it over to grandma's house or something.

Can you clarify? I thought the top part of the PNP *was* the bassinet.

some PNPs have a bassinet that hooks on top beside the changer and some just have an insert that fits down into the PNP.

  • Some of the PnPs have just the top level as the bassinet; others have this plus the "Newborn Napper" attachment that is like an extra snuggly bassinet that you can take out.

We are getting the PnP without the Newborn Napper (but with the changer attachment) and are planning to use the upper level as the bassinet for LO. My mom found a bassinet at a yard sale for a really good price that we're keeping as plan B in case the PnP doesn't fit as well as we think it will in our bedroom, or if LO doesn't like it for some reason.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • we got a PnP for the living room and a bassinet for the bedroom because of space. We could have probably made the PnP fit but I want a safe place for the baby to nap in the living room and i don't want to haul the PnP up and down the stairs every day.

Oh ok. We didn't get the newborn napper. That thing makes me nervous!

  • We are using the Fisher Price Rock & Play Sleeper in our bedroom until LO is ready to move to a crib.  It is affordable and light and easy to move, but sturdy and well made with a weight limit of 25 lbs.  I love it!

  • We plan to put him directly into his crib, but if it doesn't work out, we have the FP Rock N Play and/or a PnP as backup choices.

I really want a rock and play sleeper for naps/relaxing but for nighttime, it's a little too easy for my cat to get in there!

  • You can buy mattress' for PnP's. They are 2"-3" just measure your PnP and go to buybuybaby or babies'r'us and check them out. I think they range from $20-$40 dollars.

That might make it seem more like a bed for baby.

  • we have a bassinet that is not a PNP that we will be using the in the bedroom for the first few months... we also have a PNP but will use it more as a playpen/travel bed as she gets older.. we never used the PNP as a bassinet with ds.

  • We are using a bassinet in the bedroom until she either outgrows it or starts to roll over, then she will go into her crib in her own bedroom. We never bought a pnp and don't plan to. I like the bassinet for the bedroom because it takes up less space and it is also at the level of the bed so you don't have to bend way down to pick up and lay down LO, which could get especially painful if you had a c sec, or just straining your back.

  • I'm going to use a Moses Basket and keep that in our room.  We used it with DS and I'm a big fan!
