First of all, I am going to a new RE. He is one if the top fertility specialists in the world. He discovered ICSI (sperm injection for IVF), vasectomy reversal, ovarian transplants, amd mini IVF. People all around the world come to see him. After visiting with him, I know why.
He figured it out. The reason I'm not getting pregnant is that the ovary that was removed was the only one I ovulated from. That's why I got pregnant so easily and had regular periods then. Now, I can't get pregnant and have irregular periods. My remaining ovary is not ovulating properly. I get positive opks on day 19 which tells him that if I do ovulate (which opks only detects a LH surge, and doesn't guarantee ovulation), the egg is too old in order to be fertilized. It just makes sense to me. I only have 7-10 antral follicles on my remaining ovary which means I have less than 4 years to have more kids. After that, I will not have any more eggs that'll get me pregnant. So if we want 2 more kids, the only option is IVF.
We have a target date of Dec. 19 for egg retrival, which is my birthday! (Happy birthday to me, I'll be knocked out!) Transfer date of Dec. 22. After that I will be on Christmas break so I can relax and take it easy. We do not have any IVF coverage so we will be paying OOP for all of this. For the low, low price of around $17,000 for one IVF round. Yikes! But if the first one doesn't stick, the FET (frozen embryo transfer) will be a lot cheaper (around $4,500). We agreed to implant 2 so the possibility of twins is great but the chances are higher of implantation with 2. We are okay with the idea of twins. We will do 1 round of IVF and 2 rounds of FET if necessary (and if we have enough eggs fertilized).
Strangely enough, I am excited about this. The money part sucks but luckily DH's business is booming so we are lucky enough to be able to afford this. I feel like this'll work. As I said earlier, it all just makes sense to me. When he explained what he thought, a lightbulb went off and I knew he was right.
So I am due to start AF this week. I will have one more month of trying au natural and then in November, I will start bc pills and the process will begin late November. Anyone else have a target date in December.
Re: My IVF consultation
YAY!! At least you have a doc you can trust and a plan. That always makes me feel better. We're starting our first IVF/ICSI with next AF - should be this Sat/Sun. : ) Our ER is set for the week of Nov 7th.
That stinks about the price - IVF is too pricey in the US but i'm glad you all are in a position to proceed!! My RE just opened his clinic he has been dreaming of for years. Right now he offers IVF/ICSI with assisted hatching and all u/s's at 7500 plus meds. FET's are 2500. He may have to raise prices a bit later on but the whole reason for this clinic was to offer more affordable treatment for everyone! I got lucky he is so close!
GL, keep us posted!!
