Hourly Rate for Twin Nanny?

We need to hire a part time nanny beginning early December, because I work from home and do not have ANY maternity leave.

Is their a rule of thumb or going hourly rate for a Nanny of twins?

We are first time parents...any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Hourly Rate for Twin Nanny?

  • We're paying $14/hr for our babysitter who comes just 2 days a week. I think it's too much but from what I've gathered it's pretty average for twins in our area.
  • i think this varies by your area. you would probably be better off asking your local nest or bump board. good luck finding someone!

  • I pay $12 an hour for babysitting and light housekeeping. I don't have twins yet but I think your time is your time, it doesn't matter how many kids there are.
  • Wow, I am surprised my the responses so far.  Maybe it's just my location though, I live in California.  When I looked at a nanny service they charge at least $20 for one kid...this freaked me out thinking that a twin nanny would want $25-$30 an hour!  Out of control.  We pay my mom $16 an hour (roughly) to work for us part time.  She wishes she was in a position to do it for free, but she's not and I'd rather pay her than a stranger who would likely want more.
  • I also live in CA.  In our area $15-20 is typical for twins, or 2 kids.  We pay $16/hr for 3 afternoons/wk.

  • I would guess there are a lot of things to consider first when it comes to pay. How experienced they are is one thing. For just a "babysitter" I would expect to pay a little less, but for an experienced nanny with teaching skills and all, I would pay more. We have someone who is probably a little in the middle of both. She is 24 years old, college degree and experience, although she is younger (so only so much experience). She will also do light housekeeping. We are paying her $11.50 per hour and promising $0.50 per hour raise every 6 months if all is going well.

  • We live in Boston and we pay 18/hour for twins and a toddler
  • I am in NY. I went back to school over the summer 4 evenings a week. One nanny (who does babysitting only) charged $15/hr. The other one who also helped out with light housework charged $18/hr. I felt like this was a "deal" as most nannies around here charged $20+/hr minimum!! NY is pricey!!!

  • It definitely will depend on where you live & COL, you might want to check your local board (or if you have  local board where you live, eg themommiesnetwork type boards)

here in NC I would say $12-$15/hr is probably about the going rate.

  • I live in DC and it sounds like your area.  We have seen anywhere from 15-25 an hour.  We pay 20.

  • We pay $15 per hour for our full-time nanny, plus we give her $150 per month to help offset her cost of health insurance.
