Re: Mama's of kindergarteners...question

  • Not his name, but he occasionally writes other words backwords. Just today he wrote "spider" as "rtips."
  • Yep--not as much as she used to but it definitely happens plenty.

  • Not letters but sometimes numbers.  She just wrote a backwards 9.  I know she confuses the 3 and 5 too.

  • *not a mom, but a preschool teacher*

Totally normal.  They are still figuring out that an L is only and L if it goes the right way.  Focus on proper letter formation (starting at the top, making circles go right to left, etc).
  • I dont ever remember her writing her name backwards but she will write numbers backwards.

  • not his name but like others said numbers like 3 and 5 or 2 as an S.
  • I teach kinder and have seen kids write individual letters backwards quite a bit, which is considered normal all the way through about third grade.  I haven't personally seen any kids write their entire name backwards, but that just means he doesn't have left-to-right directionality yet, which isn't a problem--it's just something we have to explicitly teach to some kids, while others pick it up intuitively.

When you're reading to him, if you sometimes use your index finger to track underneath the words as you read from left to right (this obviously would be really annoying if you did it constantly or with long books/pages, but if you're reading, say, Dr. Seuss or a Sandra Boynton book or whatever), it may help reinforce that for him, but like the others said, probably not a huge concern at this age!

  • not his name, but other things or parts of words.  He brought home a picture of a bus yesterday with his bus number written on it twice - one the right way and the other backward.  Also had a stop sign on it with the s backward.  I think it's kind of precious ... for now.
