Shaking head

Ava has recently begun to share her head from side to side (Like saying no).  At first it was kind of funny, but then I started to worry that maybe she has an ear infection or something.  It doesn't seem to have a pattern like happen at certain times.  She isn't showing any other signs like pulling on her ear or temp, but she is crabby (but she's also getting teeth).  I'm having a hard time telling if it's just a new skill she learned or not.  Any suggestions.  Grace has not yet done this at all.

Re: Shaking head

  • Okay, clearly I meant Shake her head, not share!
  • My son does this.  He started it when teething and would shake his head with his hand in his mouth to rub his gums.  Now he does it sometimes without his hand, but I always assumed its for teething.  Curious to see what others say about it.

  • My boys still do that. Especially when they look at themselves in the mirror or sometimes they do it back and forth to each other. I think it's just a new skill that they learned.

I shake my head and sing songs when they do it and now anytime there is a song on they shake their heads, so cute!

  • OMG i was just writing in about this!! One of mine do it too! He seems to do it when he doesnt want any more bottle and my husband thinks hes so smart and knows how to say NO.. lol... I never thought of an ear infection, but he is not cranky so i think its just a skill.
  • my DS does this too - it worried me at first but I have been told it is normal and he seems to do it when he is tired and wants to go to sleep. It still weirds me out though!

  • Our Mary did it a while ago when she didn't want to eat what we were trying to feed her ; )  She doesn't anymore though.  Now Grace has been shaking her head for fun... she kind of dances, smiles, and shakes her head all at the same time to be goofy!

  • Vivienne started doing this at around 10mos.  She didn't seem crabby, but rather swung her head from side to side.  We mimicked her and said, "parrot head, parrot head", and she would laugh hysterically while she did it.  In our case it is just a funny skill.  She still hasn't figured out shaking head means no.  Audrey has.

  • DS does this.  He use to do it just a little bit but while my sister was visiting, she encouraged him to do it even more.  She has really long hair and he loved to watch it swing back and forth.  I try not to react now when he does it hoping he eventually stops.
