DH's uncle is named Kim. When he first talked about his family I thought Kim was an aunt! Then I realized that when you have 8 kids in 9 years you tend to A) Not care anymore and B) Run out of names!

Re: A boy named Kim!

  • I only know one male named Kim. I've never heard him complain about his name, but he's in his 50's..

  • Hmmmm, maybe it was more common in that generation. I'd never heard of it being a male name but then, I hadn't really researched the name either. I'd never use it for either gender.

  • When I hear the name Kim, I think it's a boys name for a girl. (Like, I imagine it's a girl with a masculine name) sort of like Kelly-it's a masculine name for a girl.

  • In 1955, it was the 97th most common name for a baby boy.  That looks like it was the height of it's popularity as a boys' name.  I dated a guy who's dad's name was Kim.

I don't see anything wrong with Kim on a male, especially in the generations before us. Completely normal name. It's not like they named him Elizabeth. Kim was a male name.

Well it is traditionally a short form of a male name. There are a lot of names we consider "female" today that were male names (in the majority) 20-40 years ago: Kelly, Kim, Shannon, Morgan...etc.

    Behind The Name

The boy's name Kim kim, also used as girl's name Kim, is pronounced kim. It is of English origin. Short form of Kim- names like Kimball or Kimberly. Kim is also a Korean surname meaning "gold". Literary: name of the boy hero of Rudyard Kipling's novel "Kim".

This. I've known a couple of guys with the name Kim.

  • I've heard of a few older men named Kim.
fraternal twin boys born january 2009
  • I've known Asian boys named Kim, though it's more often a last name than first name.

  • I know a guy in his early to mid-60s named Kim.  Back then, it was a man's name.  It only made the switch over to a woman's name in the past couple decades.
  • I know, and wholly respect, a fine male scientific researcher named Kim. Fits him great and I've never really thought about it being a female name before.

Ditto pp that it was a male name first.

DH has family friends who are a married couple BOTH named Kim (in their late 50's). Instead of calling them "the 'Lastname's" everyone calls them "The Kims" to refer to them together. I think this is yet another reason boys' names should stay boys' names.

Same here! There is a couple at my parents' church, both named Kim. My mom calls them "Mr. Kim" and "Mrs. Kim."
