Cold weather moms - Do you put undershirts on your DC?

It's getting chilly here. I went to put a t-shirt on DD this morning and it barely made it past her belly button. So, I went to Target to get some new ones.

While talking to a friend today I told her what I was doing today and she was so surprised that I put her in t-shirts. She said no one does that anymore. I told I still going to.

Is she right? How many don't use undershirts?

Re: Cold weather moms - Do you put undershirts on your DC?

  • I do not use undershirts on the kids.
  • I don't do undershirts.  I usually layer on top.  So it was chilly this morning and he had a l/s tee and a sweatshirt.  A little colder I would add the puffer vest.

  • Always! I buy the Carter's packs of the sleeveless undershirts.

I always wear a camisole myself in the fall/winter, so it only seems natural to do the same for my girls.

  • No undershirts here. That being said, in the winter dd does usually wear a tank top if she's wearing a sweater or something similar. I guess that it serves the same function as an undershirt but it's really only for when it's the dead of winter cold.

On a day like today my kids would die in an undershirt! It was very chilly this morning (40s) but now it's sunny and nearly 70 degrees. We sent ds to school in jeans, a short-sleeved t-shirt and a light long-sleeved shirt over it. As the day warms up he can take off the long-sleeved shirt, but I imagine it would be awkward trying to remove an undershirt at school!

  • We layer on top so, like today, when it goes from 40 this morning to 65 now, they can remove the top layer(s) as needed.

When the shirts don't hit the waist I buy the next size up shirts and relegate the others to jammies or around the house clothes.

  • We still use undershirts. DH actually wears two- an A-shirt and a tee shirt under his collared shirt so DS likes to wear the same thing.

For school, he wears an A-shirt everyday under his uniform shirt. He hasn't worn a tee shirt with it also, but he has worn the A-shirt and turtle neck shirt under his short sleeved uniform shirt twice so far.Once we switch him to the long sleeved uniform shirts he will wear an A-shirt and tee shirt under it when it gets cold.

  • I do.  I hate getting a draft under my shirt and usually wear a tight fitting tank or camisole under my clothes.  For the boys, I buy the sleeveless tanks and tuck them into their pants.  I'll probably keep buying them until they tell me they don't like them!

  • what on earth is an a shirt..?
  • WTH is an "a shirt?" Googling "a shirt" isn't helpful, LOL.

And two undershirts, plus a regular shirt, and I would assume a sweater/jacket/coat as seasonally appropriate too? Wow- your family must be quite cold-blooded. My kids just hate being hot and I think that maybe they just have an unusually low tolerance for being warm at all.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing

This is an a-shirt. I'm guessing that you have another name for it.

  • I call that a tank or a wife beater.

  • Oh yes, we call that a 'guinea tee'.

    Very PC

  • When we are in MN in the dead of winter, we put a t-shirt under DS's long sleeved shirt or sweatshirt - jacket/parka as appropriate. With DD last winter, we would use a onesie under her clothes. Now that she's bigger, I assume an undershirt will be a purchase we need to make. It's freaking cold!
  • I only do it if I am trying to get a little longer out of an over shirt.  L has such a long torso that some shirts show his belly.  I put a shirt under those to have the layered look.  Otherwise, no.

  • Absolutely! Every day from about October-April! DD1 wears cami tanks and DD2 will wear short sleeved onesies. I wear camis under my clothes too.
  • Not generally.  B has the tank-style undershirts that he wears under button-ups or sweaters, Natalie has a few camis for under sweaters, and the babies generally will only wear a onesie under the sweaters/thinner clothes and under pjs.  I never but anything under t's (long or short sleeve) on a daily basis....they're home most of the time, and we keep it comfortable to play without layers in the house.

  • I never used to do it, but I started last year. It never occurred to me until my sister said she uses them. I would NEVER need one, b/c I'm always hot.
  • I do under sweaters and sweatshirts. I did under DD's Packer jersey today too.

  • I do, but not necessarily all the time. As a matter of fact, I do need to get my kids a few packs for this winter. Mostly for DD I do them under dresses because otherwise I just feel like she is not "covered" enough if that makes any sense. And for DS I use them under sweaters and what not, kind of the whole layering thing. Not every time, but I do like to use them. Of course, I almost always have a cami on under my shirt, so that could be why Wink
