Cloth Diapering

1st time mom

Hi everyone,

DH and I have done a decent amount of research and have decided to cloth diaper. Everything i read though says that different babies require different diapers. I'm not sure how or what to start building my stash with.

I was going to start with NB GMD prefolds and Thirsties Duo size 1 covers. They seemed pretty versatile to me. Once the babe was here I figured we could feel out some others. Is this a dumb idea? Our main reason is the economical side of cloth. I really don't want to waste tons of money on a stash that doesn't work for my child.

  • I think that's an awesome plan to start with. It seems to me like you really can't go wrong with prefolds and covers. Since they're not really one shape, you can pull the prefold tighter in places where a fitted or OS might be loose on your kid.

Once your LO arrives, try a few different dipes until you find one that works really well, then stock up. Also, from the economic standpoint, remember that you can sell things later that your LO grows out of or that you find don't work for you. Almost everyone I've talked to has at least one pre-owned CD.

  • Look into doing a trial.  Jilliansdrawers.com has a good trial.  I think its 3 weeks for $10.  Once dd started growing out of her prefolds, we did the trial.  We got an aio, a couple of fitteds and a couple of pockets. They were all in different brands, too, so we got to see what worked for her and what didn't without spending a ton of money.
