exploding wool dryer balls... anyone else have this problem?

i don't know if i'm just not winding them tight enough or not felting them enough or what, but in the past few months 2 of my wool dryer balls have exploded in the dryer, creating a rats nest of epic proportions.

anyone else have bad luck with these?  any suggestions?

did you felt them before using? I felted mine in two stages, 'a core' and then the finished ball.

i just use tennis balls, was wondering if anyone had any ideas for your exploding problem.

but like PP said, maybe felting them in stages while winding them might help.

This happened to me too and I always thought it was that they weren't felted well enough even though I also did the 2 stage felting.  I'm wondering if I need to periodically wash them to refelt.  It seems that staticky items in the dryer (like MF inserts) are the worst.

this is a good idea to try!  i did felt them in stages like you ladies mentioned but i have never refelted them.  maybe i'll give that a try!
