Re: Thermometers

  • No you're not weird... I hate underarm thermometers LOL Plus our hospital sends you home with a regular digital thermometer... so I registered for the Nexgen Temporal thermometer, that's what we use at the hospital on kids and I just love it. Granted its an industrial hospital version... but I'm told the ones for purchase at walmart are just as good.

I have this one. If the head scanner temp is high, I still try a rectal. But of course when they are babies you have to use the rectal.

  • I don't have this particular one, but bought a similar temporal thermometer when DD was born. I used 500 times a day because it was easy, then realized the pedi would only listen to a complaint of a temp. unless it was taken rectally. It is the most accurate reading, although doesn't sound fun.

I don't think you are weird at all... just trying to possibly save you some money. You can buy a digital thermometer for less than $10 and they are way more accurate.

Hmm  Every book I've ever read and pediatrician I've ever talked to will only discuss rectal temperature with you for an infant.

before having ds#1 thats all i've read and heard.  and then after having ds, thats all his pediatrician would go by.  when ever i called the pediatrician about my ds having a fever, they would always ask what his rectal temperature was.

so its best to get a rectal thermometer as well as your underarm one.

I understand that and have researched that too. My doctor advises against it because of possible rectal damage. He told me that if babys temp was to turn up high from and underarm/forehead temp that he would ask me to bring him in and he will take a rectal temp.. which i am fine with.

  • Per our pedi, rectal temperature is the most accurate. Fever can be very serious in infants so they want an accurate temperature reading. We got a thermometer that can be used 3 ways (oral, underarm, rectal) and has a separate attachment for each way. It was important for us to have one specially designed for rectal use to minimize the possibility of hurting our little man.

I'm not meaning to come off too snarky here... but it sounds to me that your pedi is already pumping your pockets for every co-pay possible. Never heard of rectal damage being a high risk in infants from thermometers.
