3rd Trimester

Random insurance question (re: false alarms)

I know it varies from company to company, but in a general poll---if you are sent (either through an ob visit or the on-call dr recommendation) to L&D/ER for monitoring, is it a full co-pay?

I was discussing with H tonight that Probie isn't moving around a whole lot.  He asked what that meant and I told him at the very most, the on-call doc would send me to be monitored.  Thus, the discussion started.

  • My insurance covers it because it's medically necessary. I'm on Tricare (military) though.

  • I didn't go to the hospital multiple times with my DS, but with my DD I did - I went in at 30w for monitoring,36w to check for water breaking, 39 w for falling down the stairs and delivery at 41w3d.  We got a single bill from the hospital covering all of the listed services, but just one bill.  We didn't have a copay, we had a %.
  • Anything which relates to the pregancy is covered under the pre-natal care of our insurance.
  • I went in at 34w to be monitored due to lack of movement, I got billed separately for that but I don't have a co-pay under my insurance plan, I have co-insurance amount.

  • Do you mean is it billed like an ER visit? Mine definitely does not. I've been in a few times to be monitored and it's been covered every time.
  • Generally it is based on what your maternity/pre-natal coverage is. I had to go to the ER at 15 weeks. Because I was only 15 weeks it wasn't covered as maternity/pre-natal since I went to the ER not L & D.

  • I've been to L&D twice now. The first time everything was covered 100%, the second time I owed $15 in copays.
  • All my labor and delivery trips have been covered, in both pregnancies, because they're medically necessary.  I've never been charged a copay for labor and delivery.
