Anybody else get massive ankle swelling AFTER having baby??

My calves and ankles are extremely swollen!! I had my baby on the 23rd - things were fine until yesterday when I noticed they were like, twice the size they normally are. Since I was still at the hospital yesterday (I am a repeat c-section patient) I asked the nurses about it... even asked the doctor about it today... they said it's "normal" so I guess I shouldn't worry since they aren't worried.

However, I don't remember having this with either of my prior pregnancies. So it made me curious - anybody else have ankle/leg/foot swelling a few days after they gave birth? If so, how long did it last?

  • I did! They were sooooo big I thought my skin was going to rip apart. It only lasted less than a week though..

  • Me. I didn't have any swelling with pregnancy, but my legs were like tree trunks after delivery. I was on a pitocin drip for about 20 hours after delivery due to pph and I think that made it even worse.

  • I had very minimal swelling during my pregnancy. It got a little worse while in the hospital but when I got home...holy crap. You literally couldn't see my ankle bones and it seemed as though my entire legs were a bit swollen. I felt like I was wearing a fat suit from the waist down.

The swelling was pretty bad for about 4-5 days but gradually got better and was totally gone by a week and 1/2. I also had an IV pumping tons of stuff into me for over 40 hours so I was retaining a ton of fluid.

    this!  ouch!

  • I did too. I think it was because of the IV fluids. My feet, calves and ankles were HUGE. It lasted for about a week and a half to two weeks.
  • Yes! I had swelling throughout my 3rd tri though too. Swelling continued after birth for a few days to a week, I believe. I sweated out my retained water nearly every night in bed though. It was yucky but each night I did sweat, the next morning, my feet and ankles looked less and less swollen.

  • I did! I had absolutely no swelling during pregnancy but after delivery my feet & ankles were huge! I was induced with pitocin, & the doc said that made it worse. It only lasted ~4/5 days. Just keep your feet up as much as you can.
  • mine are horrible! i can't even put on flip flops.  I had my DS on the 21st so they are finally starting to go down---they look so awful though.

  • I did! My feet were so swollen and they never did it much when I was pregnant only after I had him. Dr said it was normal to swell for up to 3 weeks after.

  • I was sooooo swollen for like 2 weeks after my c/s.  I was pretty swollen before because of pre-e, but i was even more swollen afterwards.  Just keep your feet up!

  • Mine were swollen for the first week after pregnancy. They did get better but I remember them hurting like crazy and I kept feeling like they were going to burst open.

  • I did. They were so big I could barely walk. I went back to the doc 4 days pp and ended up being readmited to the hospital with post pre-e. My BP was sky high.

This. Mine were so bad that I ended up in the ER and was put on Lasix pills to flush the fluid.

  • I had awful swelling through my second and third trimester, but the day my water broke, my swelling left and never came back.  I had a natural/med-free birth, so I wonder if that made a difference on who had swelling and who didn't.

  • Yes and it turns out I was swelling because my blood pressure was dangerously high and my liver enzymes were up.  I did have preeclampsia but it got worse after I gave birth.  I had to be readmitted to the hospital a week after I gave birth so that I could be given magnesium sulfate to lower my blood pressure.
  • i did. along with that i had visual disturbances.

ended up getting diagnosed with preeclampsia after delivery.

had to be readdmitted into the hospital and put on a mag sulfate drip.

if you notice anything else strange, definitely call the dr again.

my dr said swelling after was normal too, but combined with the visual disturbances it was symptoms of pre-e.
