EC questions...

How long after feeding her should I put her on the potty?

How long do I leave DD on the potty if she's not going?

Should I praise her for sitting on the potty even if she doesn't go?

Thanks!

Re: EC questions...

  • How long after feeding her should I put her on the potty? I give him a few minutes for things to settle - unless he's nursing and he pops off - often he'll have to pee then.

How long do I leave DD on the potty if she's not going? we're very much a "*** or get off the pot" family - I know some people have books and toys, but we give it 2-3 minutes max.

Should I praise her for sitting on the potty even if she doesn't go? If he's been resisting the potty at all, then I will praise him for sitting on it. If it's business as usual then I say something like "thank you for trying! All done!" and move on.

    Thanks!

    You're welcome! HTH!

We go about 10-15 min after, but play around with the timing and see what's right for your DD. If you CD, you can always leave her cover off so you'll be aware of when she starts to pee.

I think when they're young, it should be pretty quick, just a few minutes. Now, DD gets about 10 min max because I know she'll get distracted with playing, jabbering whatever before she goes.

I agree with pp- only if she sits when that's an accomplishment of it's own, like if she's been resisting the potty- then praise. Otherwise, I wouldn't make a big deal about.

    Good luck!

  • Another huge time for catches is right after naps.  And we read books.  Generally DD pees right away if she has to go, but it takes her a minute to poo, so I always try to give her a bit of time to make sure she doesn't have to poo.  We read books and sing songs.  I also will generally try to go when she does so she sees me going too.  Another thing she really likes is to wave bye bye to her pee or poo as it goes down the toilet!

I usually bring DS to the toilet as soon as he wakes up, before he feeds. If he wakes up HUNGRY he will not tolerate toileting first so we go after the feed. Usually I let him burp and relax for a minute or two after feeding. Sometimes he will pull off and do a bit of head bobbing etc. That's our cue for a mid feed toilet trip. So basically, it changes all the time. I just go by his cues as I learn them.

I still hold DS over the toilet. If he needs to go he will either go straight away or will be quite content being held there and will go within a minute or so. If he doesn't need to go he will do a bit of a grizzle and we try again in 15 minutes or after the feed.

Should I praise her for sitting on the potty even if she doesn't go?

Since I hold DS over the toilet I guess it's a bit different. If I misread his cues and he doesn't need to go, he does his wee grizzle and I put his nappy back on. I just keep it pretty matter of fact and say something like "Ok, you don't need to go to the toilet yet, we'll put your nappy back on and try again in 15 minutes". When he goes in the toilet I don't praise him for going as such, I say something like "Yayh, that must feel really good to poo/ wee in the toilet instead of your nappy".

I usually keep a bit of a running commentary of what I'm doing when it relates to DS. I don't know if he can understand me at all but
