Cloth Diapering

XP - Cloth Diaper Reviews at 10 Months

I posted this on the AP board and just now realized that there is a CD board here.

I'm in the midst of diaper laundry and am a little annoyed right now so I thought I'd share my bad reviews here since it seems like a lot of you CD.

Overall, I'm happy with all of our fitted and covers.  Finding the right nighttime diaper was kind of a challenge and when I find something that works, DD grows a little bit and I need to find something else.

But my main beef is with our daycare diapers.  For daycare, I send 5-6 AIOs or pockets with Aplix.  These are the 'workhorses' of my stash.  Each diaper is used 2 or 3 times a week.  Below are my reviews after about 7 months of continuous use.

Happy Heinys - hate hate hate these!  They started falling apart after only a month of use.  They don't fit my LO well.  They're cheaply made but aren't cheap to buy.  I will never buy another HH again and I'd like to toss them in the garbage.  I'm not sure they will make it to potty learning but am certain that they wouldn't make it to a 2nd child.

BumGenius - disappointed!  BGs comprise the largest part of my daycare stash.  I have mostly pockets but one sized AIO.  I don't have any issues with the AIO.  About half of my pockets are starting to wear.  The strip on the front where the Aplix sticks is really fuzzy on some of the diapers so it's hard to get them off of my LO.  On some of the diapers the strip on the front is starting to come off the diaper.  Some diapers are fine.  Obviously BG has quality control problems.  I think the stash will make it to potty learning and some of the diapers would work for a 2nd child, but not all.

Thirsties - the best!  I have both the sized AIOs that were discontinued and the sized pockets.  I like both.  These diapers can really take a beating.  They aren't showing any wear at all.  Thirsties are also priced very reasonably.  I think they're cheaper than the BGs and IMHO better made.  If I was to start over, my entire daycare stash would be Thirsties.

When I do finally throw the HH's out the window in frustration one day, any recommendations for a pocket or AIO with Aplix that is durable and reasonably priced?

  • a lot of it depends on your kid. HH fit chunky babies well.

I love our BGs. Yes, the aplix is notorious for wearing after about a year, but the good news is that they have a year warrently, so send them back and they will fix or replace them. The new aplix they have is MUCh better, and thats what they will fix it with.

    I hate our thirsties. HATE.

Thats why its good to try a bunch out and find what works for you :D

  • I think some of it is perspective, too.  I didn't expect my diapers to look like new after a year of use.  I knew the aplix would wear and that the elastic might go.

That being said, I have some bg 2.0s that I bought used.  I have used them for over a year and they are just now starting to fall apart.  Sure the laundry tabs need preplaced, and the aplix isn't like new, but they are still functional.  Most of them need new elastic in the legs, but other than that, they've held up great.

I hated the thirsties that we had and sold them as soon as I could!

  • I don't expect them to look like new.  I just expect them to not fall apart.  I'm okay with fixing the Aplix or the elastic but IMHO it's just sloppy workmanship if they start to rip apart.

  • The BG 4.0s are fantastic, the new aplix rocks (or you can get snaps, but I'm in love with the aplix).
  • I find that you get what you pay for when it comes to cloth.

H&L Bottombumpers are decently priced, and the velcro tabs are nice and wide, and the laundry tabs stay. They are made of cotton and bamboo, so no MF stinkies, and they are made in the USA.
